Re: The Wonder Years is in the works!

As you know, StarVista/Time-Life has announced that in early October they will release The Wonder Years - The Complete Series as a 26-DVD set, packaged in three different configurations, with all 115 episodes from the show in an awesome "high school locker" collectible package. Originally planned as offering 15 hours of exclusive special features on these sets, the studio revealed last week that they were upping the bonus materials count to 23 hours' worth of extras, at no additional cost. And with a VERY LARGE amount of the original broadcast music included from the show's six seasons (we're expected to soon be able to offer a complete list of the music which StarVista/Time-Life has managed to clear for these DVDs).

But what about fans who don't want to (or simply can't afford - despite the TimeLife.com "installment plan" offer to break the $249.99 cost into 5 easy payments...that's less than $50 per month spread over 5 months, and free shipping) get The Complete Series all at once? Well, StarVista/Time-Life hasn't announced it yet, but Amazon.com has begun showing a pre-order listing for The Wonder Years - Season 1 on DVD, which it claims to be slated for release on October 7th.

It's described at the e-tailer as a 2-disc set for $19.95 SRP, which makes sense considering how short the show's freshman season was (the post-1988-Superbowl pilot, and then five regular weekly episodes). There are no other details there, nor cover art (although we assume it will be more "mundane" regular packaging for this). Since the studio hasn't formally announced the item then everything shown at Amazon (including date and price) may not be finalized yet, and could be subject to change.

Re: The Wonder Years is in the works!

Fairfax, VA, August 14, 2014 - From Joe Cocker's timeless rendition of the Beatles classic, "With a Little Help from My Friends" to the hundreds of classic rock, pop and soul hits that followed over the six seasons of THE WONDER YEARS, music became an indelible part of the beloved series, which ran on ABC from 1988-1993. Recognizing the music's significance to the program's setting, mood, storylines and characters, the TV DVD archivists at StarVista Entertainment/Time Life spent vast resources to ensure that the series was delivered in its most pristine and unedited state.

Fans of THE WONDER YEARS will thrill to the extensive list of cleared music, which includes 285 modern day classics and instrumentals such as "Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season)" by The Byrds, "Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen, "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream, Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are A-Changin'," The Trogg's "Wild Thing," "Good Vibrations" and "Wouldn't it Be Nice" by The Beach Boys, "My Girl" by The Temptations and hundreds of others! Including the 116 clearances of the theme "With a Little Help from My Friends," the total number of cleared songs is 401!

Here are some fun facts about music in The Wonder Years DVDs:
With A Little Help served as the theme for all 115 episodes, plus it was used one other time in the series: to to mark the passage from Junior High to High School at the end of the "Graduation" episode.
The Beach Boys and Nat King Cole tie for most songs used with five original classics each; Tommy James and the Shondells, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles and Simon & Garfunkel follow with three each.
Three songs scored triple plays:
Turn! Turn! Turn! (To Everything There Is a Season) by The Byrds; heard in "Pilot," "The Powers That Be" and "Graduation"
Respect by Aretha Franklin; heard in "Fate," "The Candidate" and "Kevin Delivers"
When a Man Loves a Woman by Percy Sledge; heard in"Pilot," "Double Double Date" and "Summer"
"Dance With Me" in Season One featured the most cleared music with NINE songs, including: "Cherish" by The Association, "The Letter" by The Box Tops, "There's A Kind of Hush" by Craggy Blue Project, "The Girl from Ipanema" by Stan Getz (with Astrud Gilberto), "Louie Louie" by The Kingsmen, "I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)" by Otis Redding, "The Tears of a Clown" by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles and "Magic Carpet Ride" and "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf
Paul Simon originally refused creators Neal Marlens and Carol Black the licensing rights to the songs of Simon & Garfunkel - until he saw the first episode, that is. "Bookends," "Scarborough Fair/Canticle," and "I Am a Rock," along with Simon's "American Tune," can all be heard in THE WONDER YEARS.

"As with China Beach, we made painstaking efforts to clear the music from the original broadcast of The Wonder Years," says Jeffrey Peisch, Senior Vice President, Entertainment Programming & Marketing for StarVista Entertainment/Time Life. "There are a handful of songs we were unable to clear the rights to, but the DVDs contain over 96% of the original songs from the episodes."

Re: The Wonder Years is in the works!

Looks like they worked hard to get as much music cleared as possible. I would say, "well done".

^I, too, am interested in such a list. But I doubt it'll be forthcoming as such a list just provides a easy way for the common folk to annoy rights holders by telling them how stupid and greedy they are.

Great job in regards to the music! 96% of music is excellent in relation of how difficult it was to obtain the clearance of rights. Maybe the fact that physical media sales is way down had something to do with the music license holders lowering the fee demands and Time Life being able to afford the music.

Doubtful they would provide a list. I'm sure a diehard fan will accomplish this, though, and it will be out there at some point.

There are sites out there that lists the songs with episodes.

Re: The Wonder Years is in the works!

I know most here are still hesitant to pay $249 for it since it's DVDs and not BDs. But considering how much music they managed to clear and we all know how expensive music costs are, I don't think the asking price is so unreasonable. Plus, they managed to get all the cast back together to create hours of bonus content. This is really something they put alot of time and effort in for the fans.

I have nothing else to add to that except

Thanks for posting this list. The one that surprises me is "It's Not Unusual". If the Fresh Prince can have it, why is the license holder playing hardball for this release?

The only one that jumps off that list to me as a glaring omission (I can't remember some of those and how integral they were to a particular episode) is "Silent Night." If memory serves that was the ending of a episode where the entire family gathered with the neighborhood Christmas carolers to sing before it started pouring rain. While everyone else scattered the Arnolds took the lead of Jack and just stood there and started laughing. Not sure how that will play out since they were actually singing it as opposed to it just being background music.

Another forum in which I participate indicates a version of "Silent Night" was performed by Glen Cambell and Cher. If so it's the *performance* that's the issue as the song "Silent Night" is in the public domain. So if there *is* a family "sing-a-long" version it's OK.

I'd be willing to pay $200 for the complete series if they would lose the special packaging and put it in standard cases. As it stands now, I will probably just wait for the standard season releases in standard cases for a much cheaper price (probably around $120 total) and forget the extras.

Re: The Wonder Years is in the works!

It's not Unusual is on there they just failed to list Tom Jones after but it is in the cleared list. I've been comparing the cleared list with the Wonder Years Music Guide (http://wonderyears.vacau.com/). The most notable omissions so far are the two Doors songs, the Ritchie Havens "Here Comes the Sun" and there also is a Neil Young song "Long May You Run" from the Family car episode that isn't on the cleared list. None of the instrumentals or TV themes seem to be cleared although I suspect most are public domain or in the case of TV themes they may not have considered those "songs"

Not having "Long May You Run" at the end of that episode is a downer. It was perfect for how it ended

Yeah, my list also contains several TV themes and also quite a few classical pieces but I assumed they didn't need to be cleared because of the 'over 96%' cleared declaration. I don't know how I missed the Neil Young track. I'll add it to my list.

An interesting note about public domain songs in the U.S.:
Remember that a musical work and a sound recording of a musical work have separate copyright protection. The children's song, "Mary Had A Little Lamb" is absolutely in the public domain worldwide, and it can be freely used by anyone. However, in the USA, no sound recordings of "Mary Had A Little Lamb" are in the public domain. If you want to use any sound recording - even a sound recording of a public domain song - you must either license a recording or create your own recording.

I saw the packaging for the set on TVShowsondvd.com and find it to be horrid! Another "premium" release put in those crappy, prone to scratch/damage discs, envelope page "books." For the asking price I expected far better. While I want the show the packaging is a total deal breaker for me. I'll wait for a non-exclusive release/version and hope for better packaging.
Do you have Shout!'s release of Barney Miller? That one was very much packaged properly, and I'm onto No. 6 of it (1979-80), and so far, no scratches. Why can't The Wonder Years be done like that?!

Yeah, that is disappointing.

Given all the time it has taken, I am happy with what they have come up with

To hell with those obstinate assholes who refused to make a deal over their precious music, most of which is long-forgotten anyway.

Re: The Wonder Years is in the works!

I could never understand the logic why some artists and/or rights holders are reluctant to have their music promoted on other media. For instance I recently watched the Yoplait commercial featuring the Kinks, All day and All of the Night..which I had'nt heard in years on radio and decided to buy it off itunes. I cant tell you how many times I've done this, whether its been in a movie, tv show, commercial ..its happened SO many times. As its been said lot of this music has been long forgotten, and this would be an opportunity to promote it to a new audience. Further, if you're on twitter most of the artists that have the most followers are people like Justin Beiber, Miley Ray Cyrus etc. vs. the great musicians of yesteryear which only encompasses a fraction of those numbers, thus its evident where the mighty dollar is going. WAKE UP!!

Re: The Wonder Years is in the works!

Here's what TVShowsOnDVD posted about the missing songs today, directly from Time-Life:

"NO scenes were cut; and in each case we replaced the music with similar music, most of it supplied by Fox"
With regards to what is missing and what was used to replace it the studio also noted:

In several cases the replacement song is nearly indistinguishable from the original (e.g. "Spinning Wheel" by Blood, Sweat & Tears vs. "Spinning Wheel" by David Clayton Thomas, who of course was the lead singer of Blood, Sweat & Tears).
The studio even went so far as to provide a complete list of what's missing and what was used to replace it:

Spoiler:
From the episode, "The Phone Call":
01. Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet - Soundtrack
(used replacement song Lovers Theme/The Star-Crossed Lovers)

From the episode, "Heart of Darkness":
02. Riders on the Storm - The Doors
(used replacement song Children of the Night)
03. Here Comes the Sun - Richie Havens
(used replacement song Train to Nowhere)

From the episode, "Whose Woods Are These?":
04. Variations on a Theme by Erik Satie (1st and 2nd Movements) - Blood, Sweat & Tears
(used replacement song Le Seunne Fite)

From the episode, "How I'm Spending My Summer Vacation":
05. Light My Fire - The Doors
(used replacement song Love's on Fire)

From the episode, "Summer Song":
06. Spinning Wheel - Blood, Sweat & Tears
(used David Clayton-Thomas version)

From the episode, "Wayne On Wheels":
07. Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet - Soundtrack
(used replacement song Romeo & Juliet with Narration/Lovers Theme)

From the episode, "The Family Car":
08. Long May You Run - Neil Young
(used replacement song Keep Your Motor Running)

From the episode, "The Tree House":
09. Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)
(used replacement song Let's Call The Whole Thing Off)

From the episode, "Little Debbie":
10. Tammy - Liberace
(used replacement song Sammy)

From the episode, "The Wonder Years":
11. Here Comes the Sun - Richie Havens
(used replacement song Train to Nowhere)

From the episode, "Kevin Delivers":
12. You've Made Me So Very Happy - Blood, Sweat & Tears
(used David Clayton-Thomas version)

From the episode, "Alice in Autoland":
13. Let's Stay Together - Al Green
(replaced with soundalike version)

From the episode, "Independence Day":
14. The Mission - Soundtrack
(used replacement song Pastorale)

Personally, the absence of those 14 songs would never stop me from buying this set. It amounts to 4% of the total music used in the show and the fact that the studio went to such lengths to keep as much original music as possible and is being so transparent with customers should count for a lot. The fact is, this is as good as it gets and if people are going to let 14 songs stop them from owning a television show they love, then that's their choice. It seems a little silly to me though...

EDIT: My Other Self just barely beat me to it...shouldn't have gone for the nice formating
