Now, if you started in with your wasting time garbage and only owned 100, then maybe(well, probably not) I'd stop and think about the validity of your comments. However, we all know that 1000 is the new 600, and in a few years, even you will have that many discs.

As for me, I'm a nutjob. I just crossed the mark (with a title count--probably many, many more discs since I have a lot of TV and multidisc sets), and I've been collecting since 1997. That's 9 years. I don't think I've necessarily wasted a ton of money, since I find very good deals for much of what I buy. Plus, I don't have cable, don't go out to the bar or partying. I don't smoke or do drugs, and am single with no kids or house payment. I work, but am also active in the community music scene, and I like my collection to share with my extended family and friends. For a while, I actually worked for a video store, which yielded even better buys on many of my purchases. I'm actually cutting down a bit, but I still have many sets yet to buy.

At last count, about 2 years ago, it was up to 700. I'm pretty sure I'm up to 1000 or very very close...

how? the thread asks who has over 1,000 DVD's, not how many DVD's you have. so please tell me again...how is your post relevant to this thread?

Alot of the posters in this thread don't have 1000, so it's as relevant as those posts.

I have about 800. There are about 30 I haven't seen yet -got them from the last sale.. plan to watch them over the next few months. the others I have seen at least once - and even rewatched a few of them. Actually, our life is very busy and I don't have a lot of time to watch films. that's why when we DO have time, we like to have a nice selection to pick from. When you only have a 2.5 hr window to watch a film, going to Blockbuster takes too much time - not to mention the fact that it not worth renting financially.

if renting did get to be $1.99 and I could keep the film for a week, then I might change my habits. But even then most of the films I buy I couldn't rent anyhow..

And despite the fact that high def is on the horizon, most of my films are before 1960, and I plan to pass them on to my children...Maybe by then they will be replaced by high def - but I that will be a long way off....and when I upgrade a film, I just give the older version to my daughter who appreciates it (and has more time than me to watch these discs!).

I bought Castle films in 8mm back in the 60's when I was young (doubt if anybody remember these - really dating myself). I spent $3 for a 3 minute B&W silent version of a film- and I was happy to get these! ah - have times have changed. Now I get upset if 3 minutes are cut from a filme! So needless to say I was an early DVD adopter. Bought Contact and 5th Element the week they first came out. So been collecting for - what - 9 years? about 100 discs a year I guess. average 2 a week - which is about right. I used to go to the movies 2x a week when I had the time...So instead of going out - spending a lot of time and money and forced to see movies based on certain time slots, I diverted that money to buying 2 movies a week - at a fraction of the cost, I might add.. Despite the investment, I feel confident I would have spent 3-5x more $ if I went to the theaters. Besides 80%+ of my collection would never play in a local theater.

Don't see anything wrong with this. saved time, money, and can enjoy and see the films I want to see when I want to see them (and have time)...

I've got just short of 300 titles so nowhere near as many as a lot of people in this thread. I would have had about double that but I sold all of my old collection a few years ago and went on holdiay for a month. I just buy the stuff I really want but still go for the ocassional blind buy. It's not a massive collection but I'm happy with it and it's always growing, I tend to go through directors and actors that I like and buy up the films they have been involved with.

I am currently at 3060 titles. My collection has grown exponentially due to DDD's 20% sales. I buy only what me or my wife likes to watch. I double-dip if I think the new release is superior to the one I own. If and when I upgrade to BluRay/HD-DVD, I will only upgrade those DVD's I believe will benefit from a High Definition transfer. I will buy SD DVD's(as long as they are being sold) if I do not believe a Hi-Def transfer is necessary. Currently I only have one HD TV, a Mitsubishi 55", but I have five regular TV's with DVD players elsewhere in my house(I probably won't upgrade those until prices come way down). Now if someone has a problem with my collection, I'm not going to be losing any sleep over it. I don't buy DVD's on credit, so they haven't put me in debt. My wife and I make a little more than $200K a year, and we have no kids, so we have a lot of "disposable income". Currently my only problem with the DVD's is storage. It is amazing just how much room they take up. I am eyeing our guest bedroom, but my wife is putting up a pretty good fight to keep that one, since I took over the other guest room years ago, and it has around 35,000 comics and magazines stored in that room. What can I say, I am a collector!

I stopped counting around 1500. I'm over 2000.

I have 1300 DVD's, about 100 VCD's, and I still consider about 600 vhs tapes to be "active" as it were. The tapes are mostly due to large numbers of foreign and silent titles I have been slow to convert(due to cost mostly) and the complete Doctor Who collection(the BBC are releasing those at a snails pace, their DVD releases of DW will not be complete until 2013 or thereabouts at the present rate).

If you stopped counting around 1500, how do you know you're over 2000? -confused-

I have a little over 1100 DVDs with about 30 or so unwatched. I have been collecting for almost 8 years now. I purchased my first player in Feb '98.

Currently at 2125, but have approx. 50 to 75 waiting to be put into my inventory. Just ran out of space and trying to figure out where the heck put more.

I'm at about 500 ish and buy the films i really want in my collection, i may very well hit the 1000 mark but don't anticipate it happening soon, size has never bothered me...in a dvd sense that is ;) and i never look at these threads as 'bragging'.....just as a sort of comfort that instills a little less guilt in myself :D

How do you shelve your 1500+ DVD collection? I imagine you need a lot of book cases and floor space.

I have about 600 something right now. I sold around 150 not too long ago and another 100 before that to pay for my laptop...just sold some that I hadn't watched and didn't plan to watch. I used to buy titles when they were cheap, etc., but now I'll only buy it if I really think I'll watch it over and over again.

I'm getting close to 1000... I have 800 or so. A lot of my friends do think I'm nuts, but what can I say? I'm just a big fan of movies in general. I like having a big collection of movies and giving people a lot of options to choose from when they visit me and want to watch a movie. I've had a dvd player since like 1998 so it wasn't too difficult to accumulate that many over that span of time.

Buy knowing how many I buy monthly. I used to keep tabs (4 years straight) of everything I brought/sold/traded. Now I just look at my shelves and guess the amount from time to time. I stopped doing an inventory 2 years ago but have increased my Hollywood 4 for 20, MovieStop used DVD purchases and TV show seasons.

I'm pretty sure I'm over 1000 nowadays. I just had to pack them up (in order to get new carpet in place), and I managed to fill up 12 comic book long boxes with DVDs.

As for me, I'm probably around 800. I should reach 1000 next year sometime (if not later this year).

Yeah, I stopped adding to my dvdaf list about a year ago or more. Although I still maintain and add to my library.....having to add to that list every fucking day was getting old. When my paddling/kayak hobby started....I had even LESS time to keep track and hang out at this forum.

Then I got tired of all the assholes who had to start the same threads all the time...why have so many dvds.....whats the point.....your selections are questionable....all that shit.

Now I figure it's nobodys biz nor do I care. Instead....I say I have around 2,000....or around 3,000....or around...whatever. It's not that I don't care to share with people. As long as I know what I have....thats all that is essential. There are about 6 longtime dvdtalk vets here who exchange emails wih me on a regular basis....just to keep in touch. That and a "check-in" here at the forums every week is enough.

Now I sit at over 3,000 titles. Do you REALLY want/need to know what I just bought today? No? Didn't think so.

I think I am pretty close to 2600 titles. Will probably get there in the next month or so.

I'm well over 3,000 titles. The scary thing is that I can't think of many days where I have not purchased a DVD. Now, my DVD buying is limited mostly to $10 and below purchases at buyback, Hollywood Movies, etc. etc. but sometimes I wonder when it will stop.

I do love my collection and I use it almost every day and I love my library. I recognize that it is a personal thing that I like and I too feel no need to justify it or show it off to anyone but myself. I like it, I earned it, I want it and I enjoy it. So with that, I'm satisfied.

Topped 2200 and still counting. Don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

285. I'm very very picky about what I let in my collection. If it isn't going to get multiple viewings, I'm talking for or five for a movie, it doesn't go in.

My collection is currently at 784.

I only have about 20 or so that I haven't watched yet. In fact, the last 2 DVDs I bought ("New York, New York" and "The Last Waltz") fall into this catagory.

My collection is mainly filled with many movies that I've grown up watching, so as a result, a lot of my collection is filled with films made in the last 30 years, but there are some great old ones in there, including "Sunrise", "Fantasia", "Sunset Boulevard", and "Ben-Hur" among others.

I've been collecting since July 2000, about four months before I finally bought my player. This was because I found the original long-OOP SE of "Little Shop of Horrors" at a Suncoast. I was almost 15 at the time, and I had to beg my mother like a child for me to have it. It was the best fight I ever fought and won.

People are shocked when I tell them how many DVDs I have, even when I tell them that I'm a movie freak. They don't understand that I'm absolutely serious about what I say. When I let people borrow stuff, they have to promise me that they won't screw with them. They do, then I guarantee they never touch my stuff again. My sister is the only person in my family I let borrow my stuff, only because she knows I care to have my collection in good shape.

I do have some bad movies, but the one thing to understand with me is that I like almost anything. Out of the 784 DVDs I own, only 51 of them are TV releases.

That's about it. I know I don't have as many as some of you, but to explain the big influx of DVDs, I worked at Media Play and the employee discount helped me get about 350-400 DVDs on basically discounted product.

I guess I'll throw my hat in here. According to Dvdspot, I have a little over 1200, with 8 more I bought today and about 20 I know isn't in their database yet. I've been collecting since December of '99 and used stores are my best friend.

If you have 3000 DVDs, with an average amount of 2.5 hours of content on each disc, you would have approximately 7500 hours of content. Assuming you just sat on your ass and watched movies for 16 hours a day, it would take about a year and four months to watch your entire collection. And if you only watched DVDs for just 4 hours a day (a quarter of your non-sleeping day) it would take well over 5 years to complete.

It'd take almost two decades to reread all my books :eek:

Count me as a recent member of the 1000-DVD club. I bought about 3/4 of the DVDs in the past two years. I blame DVD Talk's bargains forum. However, I suspect that plenty of the bargains are the result of timing- price drops and anticipation of high def. discs.

The point in having a large library of films isn't to watch and rewatch everything you have, but more of a matter of convenience, and a collection of things you're a fan of. There are many movies I own that I know full well I will never watch again in their entirety. But there are scenes and sections of those movies I know I'll want to see over and over - and that's the point of having a library.

Hell I buy alot of TV ON DVD sets, which some i might rewatch but by me buying DVD's every week i really have no time too. It's great to have them on the shelfs because one day if you have kids or something you could show them shows that i grew up on.
Hell there are only a select # of movies that i have watched more than once but I am proud to have the movies on my shelf and its a nice feeling to know that you own your favorite TV show/Movie.
