Cracked the 1,000 mark in late 2005. I'm somwhere around 1,070 titles but not sure on the exact ammount. It doesn't seem big until I really sit down and look at it, then I realize it's getting out of hand. I'm pretty much an addict at this point, I'm sure it will only continue to grow.

Are people counting films or discs ? What about boxsets ? do you count each movie seperately ?
I have 220 according to DVD Profiler, probably a few more if I would count the movies in boxsets seperately. |
Funny. The other day I found a picture of my kids in the basement. It must have been over 7 years ago. Because in the background on a shelf was my entire collection (at the time) of 6 dvd's. :D

Large DVD collections or any large collection of anything in general is usually for rich kid types who's parents do not have an idea about how to properly raise children with the right respect for money, or people who are so sad that they simply don't have a life at all.
If they had the "right respect for money" then they'd spend their money in a way you'd approve of. Unless of course, they're just part of that group of sad sacks who doesn't know the true meaning of life, like you do. |

I believe that I'm pushing towards 2000. Most people think I'm crazy for spending as much money on dvds as I do....that's why I generally try to downplay my collection. Looking at my collection makes me feel extremely proud in that I have something that the average joe doesn't have....a massive dvd library!

No...people need to buy their own dvds. Better yet, come on over and lets dip down into the Robertson Miniplex and we can watch them on my HDTV. That way I know I'm watching a properly calibrated display.:p http://smilies.vidahost.com/contrib/edoom/buzz_saw.gif |

And you can't find a fingerprint on a disc. I care about the condition of my library. It needs to have a long personal shelf life or my investment is shit. Not $...I'm talking film education and even lifelong memories. It's like a scrapbook inside to the world of gut. According to DVD Spot my collection stands at 2,183. Factor in some other region stuff that I have not bothered to enter into the datebase and it is probably closer to 2,200.

Well call me Miss NutJob I have over 1200 DVD's and I don't loan them to people and no one knows how many I have. It is my money and I don't drink or do drugs. I think I have as many books and I know I have more than 1200 in comic books.

Does looking at your collection make you feel proud of the accomplishment? I buy what I like to watch repeatedly. I have been buying since DVD came out and I don't think I have 300 yet. |

I probably have less than 250 even though I got a dvd player back in '98 because I just don't have the money & when I do sometimes I use it to do or collect something else (plus I gave away, traded or sold a few). If you guys are able to collect every movie that you love that's great. Lately I'll ask myself am I going to want to watch this again in the near future before I buy a movie because I want more than I can afford or have room for. |

so i guess saying, "to be honest" allows one to say something stupid. who the bleep are you to say someone who has more dvds then you is "so sad that they simply don't have a life at all". |
I know I have well over 800, I just don't know how much over that mark I am. I expect to probably hit the 1,000 mark eventually. I've been buying since June of '99. I really don't consider it a waste of money if you enjoy having a movie library. I don't think anyone can be expected to watch all of the films multiple times, but it's great to know that you have a huge selection when you're in the mood to watch a movie. I mean, so what if you only watch a certain title one time. It's there if you ever want to see it again. I do that all the time; I'll get thinking of a film I haven't seen in a few years and get the urge to see it again. It's nice when it's already part of my collection. So even though it's an addiction, it's much better than wasting money going out drinking or whatever (in my opinion anyway).
Worse than my DVD buying has been my constant theater upgrades. I started out with a 35" TV. Then I upgraded to a 50" RPTV. Then I sold that one and upgraded to a 65" TV. Then I added a projector with a 104" pulldown screen. Then I moved that projector to the bedroom and set up a dedicated room with a 120" mounted screen. What comes next, I don't know... |
I've been collecting since April of 2000 and I just passed the 600 mark today according to DVD Profiler (I still have the free version so you'd only be able to see around 530 if you click on the link in my sig) with another 30 or so on the way thanks to the recent CH B1G1 sale. I get probably 90-95% of my titles through various sales, hardly ever pay full retail for anything. Our DVD library is our primary source of entertainment; we don't have any sort of subscription television service and the only TV we watch is OTA network stuff. I don't make a habit of loaning them out, but on occasion let a co-worker borrow what she wants when she takes care of our cats while we're out of town.

Wow, do I feel insecure. I've only got around 400 or so (counting box sets as one). Though I do still have about 150 laserdiscs that I haven't upgraded yet.
However, I do have around 7000 CDs, so I'm not a total loser. As you might guess, I'm more of a music fan than I am a film fan. |
I haven't counted recently, but based on how many I know each rack I have holds - I'd say somewhere in the neighborhood of 400.
Still quite a ways to go before catching up with my CD collection (over 4000), but I've worked on that for almost 20 years now, and DVD for only 7. Give me another few years, and maybe I'll hit the 1000 mark. |

In regards to the guy who's brought on the scorn of others here, it's funny that we still get folks coming to a board designed for DVD lovers/collectors/aficionados and criticize those who have what is in their mind, too many DVDs. |
My collection is nearing 400. After compiling an extensive VHS and laserdisc collection, only to seem them turn into 8 track tape practically overnight, I focused on compiling a core collection of my favorite films and directors on DVD, instead of the more eclectic mix that defined my previous collections. It's nice to know that the films and artists I can't live without are within arm's reach, and you can't really put a price on that. I'll probably upgrade where necessary with the latest format, hopefully a little wiser and more thrifty on the next go round...

I have 1,205(Tho I'm try to get rid of 115 of them) dvds.I've been collecting since October,2001.
Yes 4 years and 3 1/2 months of collecting and that is my number. There are reasons... Game Stores(Like EB,Gamestop, etc.) Pawn Shops Hollywood Video/Movie Gallery Family/Friends Selling off VHS tapes ebay & Amazon So thats how I can have so many. Tho I have had to cut back on new releases, and am waiting for them to come used at Movie Gallery Buy 2,Get 2(unless I can't like SEs,2-Discs[when a 1-disc and 2-disc comes same time]TV Shows and others) |
I have over 2,000 now and have been collecting since DVDs first came out.
|
We've got about 1000 or so. Of course, I always tell my wife she's crazy for having so many DVDs (I estimated between 600-700 for her shelf).
This counts TV on DVD, and a lot of anime series, though. I'd say about 30% of our DVDs are anime. |
I have exactly 725. I actually just put in my latest purchase (Flightplan) into DVD Proflier a little while ago.
For the longest time, I didn't really think I had that many DVDs but when I passed the 700 mark around Christmas I realized that I probably have one or two too many. I've got quite a lot of DVDs I have that I've never watched, and it's a problem when I like to rewatch various movies I've seen before (tomorrow is DEFINITELY Groundhog's Day night). |
