No one answered about Scarface yet??

I really want to pick up the boxed set to get the orginal 1930's version but at that price I want to know if the upgrade on the 80's version is worth ditching the older release.

runnersdialzero 09-21-06 11:48 AM

Thought this thread needed a bump.

I'm all about the best transfers possible so I will always upgrade if a new DVD has one.

How about Born on the Fourth of July?

ShaunoftheDead 09-21-06 02:17 PM

Backdraft before it is possibly recalled that is.

The main draw for all the Special Editions is DTS. Each set comes with two discs. The first disc is identical to the standard edition. The second has the exact same episodes duplicated but with DTS tracks in English and Japanese. The reason they include the first disc at all is because it contains all the extras.

Each SE also incudes a different pack-in bonus:

v.1: soundtrack CD 1
v.2: Be Human CD
v.3: web Motoko t-shirt
v.4: Motoko ID card
v.5: Batou ID card
v.6: Togusa ID card & Batou t-shirt
v.7: metal box to hold entire season & Laughing Man t-shirt

Some of that stuff is going to have limited appeal but your mileage may vary. I suppose the ID cards are so you can convince your friends and neighbors you're really an agent of Section Nine. I believe the t-shirts all come in a size Large. The first season SEs also feature reversible cover art.

Volume 7 is becoming quite rare because even people who bought the standard releases are buying this SE for the metal box.

The second season is trickier. They ditched the regular black keepcases for a unique type of metal keepcase. They have clear plastic "view ports" so you can see the disc art even when the case is closed. Here's a pic.

The two DVDs are stacked on top of each other on the same hub, but aren't actually touching. Still there have been numerous reports of the discs coming loose during the shipping process.

The pack-in bonuses for season two are:

v.1: soundtrack CD 2
v.2: mousepad & playing cards
v.3: Motoko & Tachikoma figures
v.4: Batou, android maid, & Meditech president figures
v.5: Togusa & Tachikoma figures
v.6: Tachikoma, android maid, & Meditech president figures
v.7: metal box to hold entire season, soundtrack CD 3, & Motoko figure

The second season volume 7 will officially be released on the 26th. You can see pics in this thread . IMO it looks fantastic and even better than the metal box for season one.

To the poster who asked about the new Breakfast at Tiffany's, it's definitely worth the upgrade. There's an extended scene in the stripper bar, some new featurettes, and a new commentary.

The Fly S.E. is definately worth the upgrade both picture quality & sound. It's not close.

Lost Boys S.E. is loaded with extras & picture looks better IMO.

Starship Troopers I've got the original release. I don't know whether to upgrade to the 2-disk SE or the superbit edition?

The Superbit definately wins in the picture quality & sound.

If you want the new upgrade of Grease head to K-Mart. It's priced $14.99 but selling for $6.99. (Not in NYC)

Mostly I'm concerned about the score and soundtrack changes affecting the feel of the film, not the extra scenes. I did read a review somewhere that said Stay Gold was still part of the soundtrack, does it still open and close the film? Are the music changes good or bad? Most of all, what does everyone think about the new version, did you upgrade and keep the original? Which version do you prefer?

Bumping to reiterate the question above. I bought the 2 disc version of The Outsiders during the recent DDD sale, and am trying to decide if I should hang on to the original as well. Any opinions?

Thanks for bumping this thread. I'm wondering if I should upgrade these:

Reservoir Dogs from 10th Anniversary Edition to 15th Anniversary
Dr. Strangelove from Special Edition to 40th Anniversary

i'd like to know this answer as well.....I heard the tin case may be a limited edition and it's rated as a dvd talk collectors edition but wanted to make sure it was worth it.

Cameron 01-26-07 06:17 PM

I prefer the original cut of the Outsiders to the new version. I'd hold on to both.

I have yet to pick up the Resivoir Dogs disc, but by all indications the transfer is perfect and the audio issues were worked out. Its a must have.

indiephantom 01-26-07 09:38 PM

I'm still debating on the Dark Sky "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". I know the transfer is greatly improved, but I heard they lost the hilarious trailers (like for part 3) that were on the already impressive Pioneer release. I also love the original artwork, so I wouldn't sell it, but would possibly buy the new one eventually.

All Quiet on the Western Front 2/6/07 Remastered??

Have the original version of this and it is in need of restoration and was wondering if the version being released on 2/06/07 is just repackaged or an improved version?

The Silence of the Lambs - Collector's Edition

I probably am going to buy it, but I want to know if there were any features from the last DVD that weren't ported over to this one.

Here is DVDBeaver comparisons of the old MGM SE, Criterion and the new MGM version. In terms of the features...

Almost 6 years ago MGM put out this film, identifying the DVD as a 'Special Edition'. This new product is labeled 'Collector's Edition' and is stacked with a 2nd disc of supplements although the director commentary on the Criterion is conspicuously absent. With all the extras on a second disc it allows for more information on the first for the film and its image has benefited.

Audio appears duplicated from the original MGM 2001 digital release - a 5.1 English and standard French and Spanish DUBs.

The MGM is loaded with, generally, very good extras (although many are repeated on the old SE) - 3 hours worth of documentaries including Inside the Labyrinth: Making of The Silence of the Lambs (1:03:12), The Silence of the Lambs: Page to Screen (2 Part - 40 minutes), Jonathan Demme & Jodie Foster (3 Part - 52:35), Scoring the Silence (15:00) and the Original 1991 Making Of Featurette (8:00). There are also 22 Deleted Scenes, about 2 minutes of Outtakes, an Anthony Hopkins Phone Message, many TV Spots and some photo galleries. Included in the liner notes are some recipe cards with a Hannibal Lector invitation on one side and instructions for cooking such favorites as Fava Beans, Roast Saddle of Lamb and Deviled Lamb's Tongue - kind of cute addition.
