The American President to be re-released with new anamorphic transfer on April 18th
From thedigitalbits.com:
Warner also has Knots Landing: The Complete First Season and Robot Chicken: Season One due on 3/28. And here's a bit of good news... the studio is finally releasing a decent DVD version of Rob Reiner's The American President on 4/18. There won't be much in the way of extras, but the new DVD will at least include both full frame and newly-remastered anamorphic widescreen video (the previous DVD release was non-anamorphic letterbox only). Audio will be Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0. To make up for the lack of extras, the SRP is just $12.76. Nice http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents |
Def. will pick this up since retail should be less than $10. Hopefully they'll be a trailer or something tho :)

i missed the details on this. great news!!

Ah, good stuff.
|
Should be $5.50 at Walmart (dump bin) and about $7.19 or so at DDD.

Good stuff indeed. Was stunned when I saw this yesterday at Digital Bits. Transfer on the current release is infamous for being among the worst; I can attest to that. Wasn't sure how long the studio would take to get back to this, and was hoping for a full-blown special edition, but what we're getting is definitely good enough. Hopefully the trailer will be carried over.
Sometimes having a solid transfer and the trailer is quite enough. Better, in many cases, than if some shallow EPK-style featurette is tacked on. Just not necessary. --THX |
I had no idea the original release was non-anamorphic (or bad for that matter) since I haven't watched it in years and certainly not since I got a WS TV. I'll definitely re-buy at that price, I really like the movie.
One less snapper too. |
Awesome news, but I really hope there are at least some bonus features (Rob Reiner commentary or something). This is one of my favorite movies and it kills me to have to watch the non-anamoprhic version (which even for a non-anamorphic style DVD looks horrible). At least we'll finally get the version we should have gotten six years or so ago when it came out on DVD.
|
Why would they include a bastardized full frame version of the movie on this disc? Do they really think people who would notice and care about an anamorphic transfer are going to want a full frame conversion??? What a waste of disc space!
|
^because wal-mart means money^
i hope we see more of this with older Warner titles...plenty of FF only disc that just need a new anamorphic transfer |
Good news.

Thank God! Taking my old copy off the shelf now...

Is this still coming on 4/18/06? I can't find it up for preorder hardly anywhere. Amazon has something listed as:
The American President (Mother's Day Gift Set with Card and Gift Wrap) (1995) |

It's awfully inexpensive - I hope it's not just a repackaging of the same disc...
|
Glad to hear it. I can finally replace my Region 2 copy. It’s got a decent anamorphic transfer, but the PAL speed-up always drives me nuts.

get a card & gift wrap with it now. |
Yeah Beautiful girls is awesome and you can already get it anamorphic and with 5.1 sound in R2 and R4 very cheaply. I've bought all 3 versions!
American President is already anamorphic here ini R4 as well. |
