Repulsion - R1 Release

Any news on this outstanding film by Roman Polanski ?

I have the R2 but am not satisfied dully with the transfer, I'm hoping the R1 release is not far off.

Koch has released the film twice on DVD. The first disc had perhaps the worst, most inappropriate cover in history of the medium:

Koch re-released it in March 2005, and that disc is still in print.

Unfortunately, the Region 1 release is an abomination. I am surprised that you are unhappy with the R2 disk (I think the transfer is quite good). So long as Koch holds the Region 1 rights, we are unlikely to get a superior version on this side of the pond.

I always get a kick out of seeing that cinema sirens cover. Talk about misleading. I also own the R2 and am pretty happy with it.

I too am surprised that you're disappointed with the R2 edition. I think it's pretty darn good.

Yeah, the R2 version looks as good as I've ever seen "Repulsion" look (which has never been particularly good), but it also has a weird quality to it, a sort of digital sheen that might indicate some heavy-handed video noise reduction or something. Still, I'd certainly recommend it over anything else out there.

As for the R1 disc, the digital master and every existing copy should be buried beneath a mountain of toxic waste. With or without that hilarious covershot - which is not only ridiculous in and of itself but couldn't possibly be more wrong in connection with this particular film - it's simply a travesty.

We should find a, er, "credit" for the art department guys at Koch who designed that cover. Their names should be well known, as it's been some years now since we first caught sight of this pitiful masterwork of ineptitude and it's never, ever been topped.

I sold my R2 DVD because the quality is crap. The Criterion LD is way better.
I hope for a good HD transfer soon.

doesnt the criterion laserdisc have a commentary too??

Yes, it is the commentary that are on the AB I think. You can see my comparision between the AB dvd and Criterion LD here: http://www.hometheaterforum.com/htf/...d.php?t=244699
