Best Extra's of 2005

Which DVD released in 2005 (from the poll listing) contained the best special features?

Shagrath 01-06-06 02:25 PM

What poll?

Groucho 01-06-06 02:26 PM

There was one guy in the background of Crash that did a really good job. He gets my vote.

No "Other" option? Personally, I thought the Batman Anthology was pretty great.

Count de Monet 01-06-06 02:49 PM

This one really needs an "Other" option, especially considering that most of the extras on JAWS were previously released on LD or DVD, and TITANIC is missing any kind of serious documentary. Oh, and THE FLY wasn't released by Criterion. Maybe a little more thought should have been put into this.

My vote:
GLADIATOR: EXTENDED EDITION

animatedude 01-06-06 02:58 PM

Titanic?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF?!! i've been buying dvds for ages and Titanic special edition is the most disappointing special edition EVER.

FUCK FOX.

FUCK FOX.

Titanic was released by Paramount... Not Fox :)

Count de Monet 01-06-06 03:02 PM

Fox did most of the work on the TITANIC DVD. Paramount merely distributed it in the U.S.

jfrost 01-06-06 03:07 PM

BTW - The Fly should have been (Collector's Edition) not (Criterion Collection).

Is there an echo in here? This thread needs a "do-over" button.

I voted for King Kong based on the choices given, but my real selection would have been Criterion's F for Fake.

marty888 01-06-06 03:40 PM

Forgetting the poll for a moment .....

For me, one of the best "extras" trend was the inclusion of an alternate version of the film. I'm not talking about a director's cut, but a completely different film version, such as:

BEN-HUR - includes the silent version
WIZARD OF OZ - includes earlier silent versions
ANNA CHRISTIE - includes German language version, with completely different cast except for Garbo
STATE FAIR - includes the somewhat dismal Pat Boone remake

matome 01-06-06 04:07 PM

Titanic

JMcCraw 01-06-06 04:29 PM

Based on what I've seen it was a tough call between King Kong and The Fly (and the Devil's Rejects for that matter but it wasn't a choice) since my favorite Extra is a feature length Documentary.

Ultimately I had to go with Kong as it was the most informative and entertaining.

Libby 01-06-06 04:41 PM

Sin City- the addition of the comic book even made the set more beautiful:)

OldBoy 01-06-06 04:43 PM

that all green screen version on "Sin City" Recut... was awesome!

LBCrazyFool 01-06-06 05:16 PM

Out of all of those choices I will go with Sin City.

Mr. Cinema 01-06-06 05:26 PM

How about the King Kong Production Diaries.

Josh H 01-06-06 05:32 PM

Gladiator Extended or Cinderella Man Collector's edition for me.

Assuming the King Kong Production diaries don't count as extras since they were sold on their own. ;)

Ginwen 01-06-06 09:27 PM

Out of the choices probably Ben Hur for the silent version, or Wizard of Oz for the various Oz versions.

For me, though, the best was Hoop Dreams just because having the commentary from the guys the movie was about added a whole new dimension.

Fincher Fan 01-06-06 09:46 PM

Where's The Frighteners?

Atreus 01-06-06 10:17 PM

I chose King Kong but as soon as I clicked it I remembered that Ben Hur came with the earlier version of the film so now I kinda wish I chose that. Also I haven't picked up the new Sin City yet (or the old one for that matter) but I hope it starts a trend in theatrical cuts being included with extended cuts.

RevKarl 01-07-06 01:05 AM

Another vote for the Ben-Hur 4-disc special edition set, specifically for the 1925 silent version (which is superior, in numerous ways, to the Oscar-winning film)...as well as a friendly reminder to fellow DVDTalk pollsters to use "Other/Not listed above" as an option in these threads.

TomOpus 01-07-06 07:36 AM

Tough choices here. I had to go with Wizard of Oz but King Kong was a close second.

ryuryu2949 01-07-06 08:13 AM

I voted for Sin City. The featurettes are top notch, the ability to view each story on its own is fantastic, and the green screen version is very cool. Plus, what other dvd released this year gives you a great movie PLUS shows you how to make breakfast tacos?

PS- Forget to mention the live audience commentary, a very cool feature.

ReduxGuy 01-07-06 12:19 PM

Sin City, followed by The Fly.

garmonbozia 01-07-06 02:22 PM

Wizard of Oz, easily, for the inclusion of the earlier film versions.
