A Bit of Fry & Laurie 8/22/06

I just received word from BBCAmerica that the first season of "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" will finally be released on DVD August 22, 2006. No word on the other seasons, or on the inevitable box set.

With all the press Hugh Laurie has received from 'House,' I can't believe they didn't come out with this sooner...

It's about time. I've had a crappy dvd-r copy of some old episodes for about a year now.

Let us all hope that this is indeed the full first season and not just a re-release of the video compilation that was released on VHS in the early '90s (the BBC have been known to do that: look at the Not the Nine O'Clock News release which is simply a re-release of two old compilation VHSes, not full episodes).

If this is the first series, let's hope they had the foresight to include the original Boxing Day 1986 pilot episode as well. It preceeded the first series by more than two years. So, this should be either a six-episode or seven-episode release, depending on whether or not the pilot is included and should clock in aroudn 180-210 minutes if it is indeed complete episodes.

The UK release is called "Series 1" so we can only assume that's what it is.

Let us hope that the US release will be identical to the R2 one that's coming out in a couple of weeks (other than a transfer to NTSC rather than PAL).

The reason I hope they're identical is that the R2 is supposed to include the rarely seen "pilot" episode that was shown at Christmas, 1986.

Since the BBC themselves are doing the R2, I would hope it would be a no-brainer that the R1 will be the same, assuming it's BBC Worldwide who are doing it (i.e. and they're not farming it out to a smaller label like BFS).

Anyone got anymore info on this?

yes, the UK series 1 is out april 3rd - check the play.com archives and you will see series 2 is out in the UK a couple of months later...

I can't wait.

DonnachaOne 03-22-06 09:54 AM

Oh, this news just cheered me right up this foul morning.

Of course, that doesn't really answer my question as to whether the US release will be exactly the same as the R2 (except in NTSC) or not. I guess we'll just have to wait until specs are announced. If the US release is those horrid "compilations" from the '90s, or if they leave out the Christmas pilot, I'll just go ahead and get the R2...

So now that Seasons 1 and 2 have come out (YAY!!) - any word on Seasons 3 and 4?

Thanks!

taronga 11-14-06 10:57 AM

The final two seasons have already been released in region 2, so hopefully region 1 editions will come just as quickly.

Rooked 04-30-07 04:41 PM

Yes, that completes all the episodes. Unfortunately, there were no specials (other than the "Pilot" I suppose) out of the regular 4 years of episodes.

Nice to finally have Seasons 3 and 4. Did anyone else notice a pretty harsh layer-change on the Season 3 DVD? Right before the "From Here to Just Over There" sketch...

JoeP 08-13-07 04:22 PM

Hugh Laurie is God.

That is all...

DGibFen 08-13-07 07:38 PM

There's also a box set with all four seasons if you've not picked up any of these - http://www.amazon.com/Bit-Fry-Laurie...7051844&sr=8-1
