Criterion, here's a suggestion:
But all three in a nice box-set bundle with Ran, to minimize the pain felt by the Financially Overextended League Of Kurosawa Double-Dippers.

Great news. I refused to buy the current editions due to their transfer issues. I hope these new ones will look much better. If so, I'll buy them in a heartbeat.

Maybe we will finally see the improved subtitles they've been teasing us with for a long time now.

I still see this as a long way off. HD is still not a viable source of income. It will appeal to home theater enthusiast, and many major studio titles will see a dual release, however I think dvd has a long shelf life in front of it, as many don't have the means not only for the players but the television sets needed to display the image. I see HD as a compliment to dvd, much like Laserdisc was to VHS. I still see long legs for dvd, and assume criterion does as well.

Lots of us prefer those translations over the "new and improved" ones - yet Criterion only gave us a choice to pick between them on Throne of Blood, and abandoned that practice afterward.
This has been a dealbreaker for me on new Criterions - I watch the new editions and almost alway prefer the older subtitles(except for the Hidden Fortress, which is a fine new translation).
I won't buy any new Criterions unless they once again give us that choice, and I know others who feel the same way.

Why doesn't Criterion announce upcoming titles further in advance?
We announce upcoming DVD titles in the Coming Soon section of the website. Titles are usually announced three months prior to their release. We refrain from announcing upcoming DVDs further down the line because our release schedule is very much subject to change. We do not wish to mislead customers by announcing an upcoming release only to delay or cancel said release. By announcing only those releases on the immediate horizon, we can be confident not only of when they will be released, but can also provide fairly complete details of the disc’s contents.

I would expect that the new editions of all three of these films (Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro) will be available as a discounted box set (much like the previous Akira Kurosawa: Four Samurai Classics box set, but without The Hidden Fortress) as well as individually.
Criterion certainly recognizes that many of the younger (and poorer) fans of these films would balk at paying $40 each.

They claimed they would be coming in 2006, but there isn't a whole lot of '06 left.

both of those, as well as some sam fuller movies were supposed to be out in 2006...criterion has announced all if its 2006 titles except December...
odd they wouldn't release all three same day as seven samurai
