My 2-disc version is shipping from Dvdplanet today.
Got the 1 disc at walmart today, they were selling a double feature pack of CM and a Beautiful Mind for $20.
Well, Target had it - but I didn't get it. It was $35, and when the single disc (which is actually more like 2 discs, since it's 2-sided) is only $15, that's just too big a price jump to justify more than double the price for just some extras.
I hate Universal - when Warner Bros. puts out both a single disc and a 2-disc, the 2-disc is only $2-$3 more, which makes sense. How the fuck does Universal justify the $20 price hike? |
A good number of the Deluxe versions at the Best Buy in Cambridge MA today. I bought the 1-disc with its nice $14.99 price, but again there were NO King Kong sketches to be had.
Just grabbed the Deluxe but it will have to wait until I get through the new Fox Noir titles.:D
I picked up the Deluxe Edition. Very nice I must say.
Got the one disc at Wal Mart. Plenty of extras & just couldn't see spending almost $20 more for some pretty packaging & extras I'd probably not watch more than once.
I picked up the one disc it has plenty of extras for me, and paying twice as much deemed unworthy.
I went with the Deluxe, tough on my budget, but the packaging is awesome and some of the additional extras sounded good to me. I love delted scenes, so more of those are great, and I'd like to see the real Braddock-Baer fight footage.
As a couple others said, I have no problem with this release scheme as it's not a case with something like Batman Begins and tons of movies lately where there was a barebones release for $15-18 release week, and a two disc (that's just on par with the usual releases we are used to) for $25-30. The 1 discer is 2 sided and full of extras, and thus is far from a barebones release. In fact, it's on par with most nice 2 disc special editions. There's just also a nice 2 (really 3) disc version in nice packaging with a scrap book and some photos for those of us who really loved the flick enough to spend the extra $$$. |

The LaserDisc phase of the market (if used properly by the studios) was and will be a good learning curve for what to do and not to do in order to sell a product. Pricing your product higher than what the masses will pay is a good way of killing it altogether.
LD was pricey (manufacturing costs were supposedly very high) and deals were few and far between but it was as exciting and wonderful every tuesday - just like DVD is now. Bought the 2 disc deluxe version - haven't opened it up yet. |
Those of you who bought this title from Best Buy - has anyone managed to get the King Kong Production Sketch/Coupon at their local store?
My Best Buy (Brockton, MA) had plenty of the sketchbooks on the large display rack as you entered the store. No deluxe editions on the rack, though. I found a handful of those in the New Release section.

It was another frustrating time at Best Buy. Before she found it, the blue robot looked a few spots and then came back with the Cinderella Man Deluxe Edition and said "this is the only other thing we have that's Cinderella Man, it comes with a book." "The only thing I could find in the storage closet was a King Kong book." I kindly replied: "that's it!" All that time she was looking for Cinderella Man stuff even though I told her numerous times it was a King Kong book for "buying" the movie. Their customer service is severly lacking. Any promotional/advertised item, great or small, must be out on the sales floor. From what I'm gathering, none of these books are even out of the box yet. BTW, the book is pretty cool. It's very small, but I like the sketches and it comes with a $3.00 off coupon for the massive King Kong production diaries set that comes out next week. I hope it's on sale. The price on the site is like $33. |
Good to know that they're out there for some people. Very disappointing to find that BB did not get their act together for certain stores. I mean, I'd like my little book and the coupon - but to make a special trip back to the store is a bit much.
Maybe they're just confused because the promotional item has NOTHING to do with the movie except that it's from the same studio.
When the store is on the way home, it's no problem for me. I like to torment Best Buy when I have a chance.
I'm definitely not in the market for this movie, but for those that are, remember GameStop's policy of pricing all versions of a movie the same. Two caveats as always: The DVDs will be used, and you have to find a store that will have them.
i picked up clone wars 2 and a kong sketch book today.
they only had 1 cm 2 discer left. i saw about 6 or 7 at target today. dvdempire shipped, dvdplanet and deep discount has not. |
Just watched the 2nd disc. Some excellent stuff on there, especially the documentary about Crowe training for the movie, the fight choreography doc and the footage from the real fight (all 15 rounds, just not the full 3 minutes for each, a little over 30 minutes total).
Combined with the packaging and inserts, I'm glad I shelled out the extra $$$. |
It's been 2 years and I just bought the 1-disc at Ross for $6.99. I haven't opened it yet. There are still some 2-disc sets out there. I was wondering if the extra disc is still worth it? The 2-disc now sells for $23.99 new.
I thought the 2-disc is supposed to be very hard-to-find/rare as most of the Universal 2-discs are (Jarhead, Munich, for example)? Dunno if that really makes a difference, but if I liked the movie and could get my hands on a rarer item, I'd probably go for that. $17 more for the second disc is a lot... several people have covered what's on the 2nd disc though... decision's really up to you now
I saw this Used a few months ago for $12.99. When I went back later to get it, it was already gone.
