How are your dvds arranged?
 

Just moved in with my girlfriend and I have all my dvds against the wall on shelves from floor to ceiling. (a little over 1000 with the box sets on another wall) She complains since I have so many I should have them in alphabetical order. I have them listed by Genre.(comedy..drama..horror ect) Can everyone list how they have their dvds arranged so we can end this argument??

alphabetical for the movies and tv, music dvds are with the cds

Sorry I can't help you - I have mine ordered by studio or distributor with a separate section for TV.

Mine are arranged very similar to how I list them on my DVDaf.com link (by genre sorted alphabetically and by favorite actors sorted chronologically).

I guess I should add they are alphabetical on their studio shelf.

Criterions by number. Everything else alphabetical.

oops i forgot to mention that too. I have my music/musical dvds with my cds

1. Movies - chronological by director, followed by
2. TV shows - chronological by the first air date of the show, followed by
3. Music videos/concerts (date of release), then
4. Miscellaneous

I once read that one way to turn off a girl is to have things like CDs - and I'd say DVDs, too - arranged alphabetically. ;)

Mine are roughly organized by genre, but before that I group together movies where I have two or more movies in a series first. So, starting at my top shelf, I have Trek (9), Star Wars (6), Indiana Jones (3), Alien Quad (4), BTTF (3), Karate Kid (4), Matrix, (3), Terminator (3), MIB (2), JP (2), Spider Man (2), XMen (2), Shrek (2), Ghosbusters (2) ... and so on.

After those, I have it set up by genre, like drama/action, comedy, and horror. My TV releases are grouped together separately.

Sometimes I'll use an actor to make a "transition." I have Shawshank next to Glory (Morgan Freeman.) I have Scarface and Pulp Fiction together (gansters). I have Mars Attacks, War of the Worlds and Independence Day together (Mars movies.) After ID, I have I, Robot (Will Smith). I have Final Countdown and Top Gun side-by-side (fighter plane movies). I have Running Man, Total Recall, Robocop and Starship Troopers together (goes from Arnold movies to Verhoeven movies). I have Modern Problems and Fletch side by side (Chevy Chase.)

Most of the time, it's easy to figure out where to put new titles. Sometimes I get tough ones. It was tought to figure out where to put Planet of the Apes. And I was never sure wehre to put Sneakers.

But overall this works for me, and doesn't really take much thought or effort. But I'll never do alphabetical.

Alphabetically, Anthing else is to OCD for me.

Currently:

TV Sets in kind of a random order on one long shelf. A & E sets sort of random on a second pair of shelves. Boxed movie sets semi-random on another set of shelves (I have all the sets arranged by other ones that seem similar to me but would seem random to anyone else). Next come all the DVDs (except Criterions) in non-snappers in alphabetical order. Then all the snappers in alphabetical order. Then all the Criterions, varies between Alpha and Numerical depending on my mood.

I also have a separate shelf below the A & E stuff where everything goes until I watch it. It's pretty packed right now thanks to DDD, but it goes down fast.

I'd probably have them all together (except the snappers, which stick out too much on the shelf when mixed in, and the unwatched), but this screwy arrangement works best for my shelf space.

Most of my collection is alpha. Boxsets of 3 or more are sorted alphabetically separately. My Criterions are sorted by spine #. My new DVDs are quickly integrated and kept sealed until viewing. DVDs that I may be selling are lined up in another shelf for final viewings.

Just put em' in alpha order if it makes her happy... You moved in with her, better get used to not having your way. Life, as you knew it, is over.

I have them divided into 3 categories...movies I've yet to watch, movies I've watched but still have bonus features to check and dvds that I've finished. And they're all alphabetized within those categories.

I'm a touch on the anal side.

Alphabetical mostly. I keep boxsets, criterions and music vids separate.

I don't know about you, but I laugh at every single "tip" in Maxim, FHM, etc. Unless they interview the woman you want the answers are meaningless. Cindy Crawford doesn't know my gf's weak spot, favorite meal, or favorite date movie of all time. I do. ;)

On topic, my movies are stored alphabetically. I then have two shelves for movie boxed sets/trilogies and TV on DVD. I also store comedy CD/DVDs with the boxed sets. I think the movie boxed sets look better on display, there's no point in paying for the spiffy box if it's the meat in a movie sandwich. :lol:

they're not in order at the moment, but that's the order I prefer them

I have just moved into my apartment. I need to rearrange them.

I plan on changing them after I recatalog them via dvdaficionado. My TV shows are already on a different bookshelf. My disney collection is already on another. I need to separate the rest by genre, then alphabetically. I will also have a separate section for boxsets, criterions, and superbits.

I have a separation for TV sets, movie collections, then movies, then another case has my anime and then my foreign.
Contents of each section are alphabetized. Non-standard editions are set off on another shelf or on the top of the shelf.

I just do straight alphabetical. I'm considering separating TV on DVD when I finish my movie room, though.

I considered genre, but decided against it. Too many movies fall under multiple genres, so it gets confusing. I don't want to be looking for a movie and say "gee, did I file it under sci-fi, horror or action?" And the bigger your collection, the more of a pain that becomes. I want to go to where it is and pull it off the shelf. For example, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. Cartoon? Comedy? Musical? Too many correct genres to choose from.

With Alphabetical the only decisions you have to make are whether or not to classify a title with a number at the front as numerical (thus grouping all of them together in numerical order) or as if the title was spelled out (putting "24" in the T's). That and whether to classify a DVD named after a person under first or last name (R or W for Robin Williams).

I have all the TV show related sets on one shelf and everything else is on other shelves. No order... aside from movies franchises/tv series being together.
