What are some of the films that go in the miscellaneous category? Are they films by director's who aren't really considered auteurs, such as Casablanca by Michael Curitz?

Everything in alphabetical order, 1 section of all movies and another of all tv/box sets.

I'm big on directors, so of course they're arranged that way, chronologically. All others are arranged based on genre. Box sets and special editions are prominently displayed because I like to show off!

You can dig up countless threads on this topic. But in brief....I mainly file by genre and director when it comes to films. Occasionaly, I even file by spine color and art....within the genres. But you know, flesh eaters has it's own section as does swashbuckling, film noir, nunsploitation and tittie torture, sci-fi, Hitchcock, Bava, Argento, comedy, war related, bible and roman, Sonny Chiba, Kurosawa, giallo and so an and so on.

Stuff I'm currently watching, on the top shelf of the narrow rack next to the player; video games are in there as well. Bigger box sets [Excel Saga, Farscape, Freaks and Geeks] on top shelf of a big mahogany bookcase; second shelf, candles/knickknacks; third shelf, my boy's books, bottom, in the doors, random stuff and a few 'extra/need more room' titles.
Then a brown multishelf rack with doors for everything else, although stuff has since outgrown it and is now on the bottom open shelf; no real order, except for series/sequels are all together [mostly].

I did have mine in alaphabetical...now I dont have enough room. I need to purchase dvd racks but Im not sure where.

Alphabetically seems to make the most sense to me. Not just because that would make a certain title easier to find, but also because that's how DVD Profiler (or any other organization program/site) does it. I can print out a list and do a quick inventory check. My brother has a habit of coming over and borrowing DVDs without asking. This way I know what's missing. There are a few titles where I've had to edit the sort titles to get them where I want them, such as the LOTR movies and some sequels. If I want to browse genres, I can run a report for that.

Well, sadly mine are in 4 different rooms, so on my main dvd rack are a lot of sci fi and favorite movies, then I have some boxsets on a shelf, and a few piles like disney, or wrestling, pile of stuf to watch, and the rest, just around...

One area for anime, one for each main\sub genre, one for music videos\concerts\miscellaneous, and I alphabetize each within the genre.

Alphabetic is the way I do it and the most convenient for anyone who other than the collector. Mine are all in racks in alphabetical order unless they are sequels like Lost World goes between Jurassic Park 1 and 3. Jewel of the Nile goes after Romancing the Stone. Pretty simple. The box sets are also in alphabetical order but kept on a shelf in a different location.

Alphabetized, but categorized into a variety of genres. Sci-Fi, Horror, Comedy, Drama, Romance, Action/Adventure, Thrillers, Animation. Television shows are divided into comedy, drama and animation. In addition, box sets are kept apart and not really organized. And in my second cabinet full of DVDs, I've taken some series out of the movie shelf... For example, all the Halloween movies are together with my Nightmare on Elm Street, Omen & Amityville boxsets. Complicated system, but it works for me.

Currently most of my DVDs are arranged in alphabetical order. Single cases and boxed sets grouped together. But they have been in disarray for a while. Planning to clean up the whole thing soon and separate the boxed sets, put them on a different shelf. Will likely further rearrange by content (movies, TV shows, documentary material, etc) when my collection grows large enough, and boasts enough of that variety, to warrant it.

Here's a question: Do you consider a single film packaged in a slipcase with a supplemental book to be a "boxed set" (example: Jaws - 30th Anniversary Edition)? Or does that go in with the single cases in your collections? Also, what about films like Titanic? One movie with three discs to its name. Boxed set? Sets like The Ultimate Matrix Collection and the Star Wars Trilogy clearly are (multiple films packaged together), but what about one film that gets multiple discs?

Randomly. Yes totally random. I just put them in when done with them. I don't have tons so it doesn't really take long to find a title.

They ONLY semblence of order is that the snapper cases are together since they are a different size then the other cases.

I have the following sections:
Keep Cases
Snappers
Disney Classics
Box Sets (I'm going to seperate TV from film, probably this week)
and what I call "Special Editions" which are any DVD that doesn't fall into any of the above categories. This shelf has digipals of all different sizes, and other items like the 4D GWtW. I also put films that have supplements that rest inside the slipcover like Jaws or Batman Begins. Slipcovered keepcases reside with the other slipcases.

I tried pure alphabetical, but the differing heights and widths of the various movies did not look good to me.
