PVC pipe DVD racks?

I remember a year or so back reading a website with plans for making your own DVD racks out of plain old PVC pipe. Does anybody remember the link?

Not a bad idea but I would've painted the rack black before actually using it. That would turn "cheap" to "chic" :)

dsa_shea 11-26-05 09:42 AM

Looks pretty cool to me but it also looks like a lot of work putting it together.

Buy black PVC instead of the white, problem solved. :)

:p but wouldn't it still have that printing on it... maybe in white? I just thought it looked a little tacky.

Many thanks! Just the site I was looking for.

Yeah, black pipe would look better. As for the lettering, it might be possible to just sand it off. Or at worst, just turn it so the lettering faces the wall.

It might look a bit ghetto, but it'll be in my bedroom where no one can see it anyway. (Reaching critical mass on my regular shelves, and too poor to afford another wooden unit)

You are a brave man to admit this.

What does ghetto and black have to do with anything? There are plenty of people of different races that live in the ghetto.

Tarantino 11-26-05 07:00 PM

No there aren't. Just black people.

Okay, before this gets too derailed and closed...

Looks like a fun project.

What's your basic plan for what you need? How many DVDs are you gonna be putting into this new shelf and have you priced the amount of PVC pipe you'll need? I was curious how much money you might save.

mndtrp 11-26-05 07:22 PM

That's actually kind of cool. I also wonder how much it will cost.

garmonbozia 11-26-05 07:23 PM

For what it costs to buy all that pipe, couldn't you just get a cheapo bookcase from IKEA or someplace similar? I keep all my dvds on cheapo IKEA bookcases. can fit two rows of dvds deep.

If I didn't have a 3 yr old and a 7 yr old (who'd have every DVD scattered in a few minutes) I wouldn't have to lock mine up. If I didn't have them, I think I might use this idea. I like that "college dorm" look (a.k.a. the "not-racist" look, LOL).

ShagMan 11-26-05 09:27 PM

I think this is a cool idea, however you can build a MONSTER dvd rack, I'm talking 3000+ dvd's, out of wood, stained/spraypainted black, for $100. I've built one. I used a smaller (1500 dvd size) bookcase I had already... it's easy to do, took me a weekend, including drying time.

materials for the wood bookcase:
boards for shelves 1x6x12 8 $8.65 $69.20
boards for verticals 1x6x12 2 $11.98 $23.96
base board 1x10x8 1 $9.65 $9.65
to cover the back(hardboard) 1/8" 4x8 2 $6.69 $13.38
--------------
$116.19

If you do this PVC project, you'll definitely want to paint it, because the PVC glue will stain (I don't recomment slip-fitting with a rubberr mallet!!!). I'd paint it gloss black for that uber-cool look :) And definitely go with a good ratcheting PVC pipe cutter, it's awesome.

If you have not priced PVC pipe lately you might want to check. My dad is the manager of an electrical wholesaler and he says PVC skyrocketed in price after the hurricanes this year.

dsa_shea 11-27-05 09:51 AM

If someone decides to build one of these please let me know more or less the total cost and an approximate assembly time.

It was still reasonable (IMO) even in the hurricane region (I live in Mobile, AL)... I just finished plumbing for a pool, a 10' stick of 1.5" schedule 40 was $4 and change at Home Depot, and fittings were all 50c-$1 or so.

I rather go, either the Ikea way for quick satisfaction, or save for a nice Boltz rack -smile-

The price might have come back down some now, but I know right after Katrina the price doubled or even tripled on some PVC. Some companies even quit shipping new orders. My dad lives in Albany, GA and his store was the only distributor in town other than Lowes that had PVC in stock for several weeks.

Panda Phil 11-27-05 12:48 PM

I'll be going out later this week to check prices. Will report back then.

(Not-racist. Jeez you guys...)

chemosh6969 11-27-05 06:14 PM

Claiming you're not racist usually means you are. Only black people live in ghettos. Every other race lives in castles on white clouds because the black clouds are where the ghettos are.

I also find it pretty racist that some people wouldn't consider buying black PVC simply because they could paint the white black. That way when you have the klan meeting you can scratch off some paint and show them it's not really black.

I also found that white boy gif up above to be pretty racist as he keeps yelling white power over and over.

But but but, those are the ones throwing white lightning at me. WTF?
