WBs Controversial Classics 2: The Power of Media ---->2/28/06
From thedigitalbits.com:
Some new announcements: Warner Bros. has set new 2-disc special editions of Dog Day Afternoon and Network for release on 2/28 (SRP $26.99). The two will also be available as part of a Controversial Classics, Volume 2: The Power of Media collection (SRP $59.92) which will also include the new 2-disc All the President's Men. All three titles will include anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Extras on Dog Day Afternoon will include audio commentary by director Sidney Lumet, the new 4-part The Making of Dog Day Afternoon documentary (featuring The Story, Casting the Controversy, Recreating the Facts and After the Filming), the vintage Lumet: Film Maker featurette and the film's theatrical trailer. Extras on Network will also include commentary by director Sidney Lumet, along with the 6-part The Making of Network documentary (including The World and Words of Paddy Chayefsky, The Cast and the Characters, Mad As Hell! The Creation of a Movie Moment, The Experience and The Style Network by Walter Cronkite), a vintage interview with Paddy Chayefsky from the Dinah! show, Turner Classic Movies’ Private Screenings featuring Sidney Lumet and the film's theatrical trailer. We've posted the details for All the President's Men previously. |
To paraphrase this site's own Scott Weinberg: two movies qualify as a "collection" now?
|
Three movies apparently. All the president's Men, Network, and Dog Day Afternoon.

Wow, seems (to me) like a huge letdown to the "Controversial Classics" name. That first set is amazing, this one appears very disappointing.
All these films are already anamorphic, correct? |

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ While I won't buy the box, I'll probably double-dip and pick up the individual discs later on down the line as CH enrollment titles. |
Only Dog Day Afternoon for me (from CH).
I was excited about the thread title... Then I read the thread. |
What the #$%^ is this? These are 3 great films, all from the 1970s, all controversial, and yes, all classics. Many (such as myself) have been holding out for years for WB to revisit these films, and release them with the treatment they deserve. The original DVDs of all three of these are almost 8 years old, right? I'm thrilled these are finally coming out, and I'm thrilled that they'll be together in this set. I couldn't care less that they're calling it "Controversial Classics". I have the first set, and it's great, but if you don't care for this one, there's always Volume 3. WB is doing phenominal work with their catalog releases... sometimes I think people around here have run out of halfway-reasonable things to complain about. Sheesh.
"A Face in the Crowd" may've fit into this set pretty well, I think. JiM T |
Still waiting for Warner to release The Devils and Cruising uncut for some real still controversial classics:D
These are three great film though,but the controversial classic label seems rather unneeded. As if they have to sell these films as 'daring' to get people to buy them! They may have just left it alone as the "Power of Media' set which seems more appropriate given the themes of the films. |
I'm excited about this because I had planned to buy all three movies and hadn't gotten around to it yet. The first CClassics set was very very good.
|
I'm more disappointed that the set doesn't offer up titles from the '30s-'50s like the first one did. When you break it down, this set's only down one disc, but it'd still be nice to get a hefty helping of classic films in this set, as we've become accustomed to these WB collections.
|
love the box set, but the branding is a little strange. When i hear contrversial classics all i can think is....More Muni on dvd.
|
Looks good to me! All 3 are great movies, and yes - they are and/or were controversial. If Sidney Lumet's commentaries are half as good as his writings on filmmaking, this should be terrific.
As someone who really enjoyed last year's Controversial Classics set, I have to say this new one is a bit disappointing.
We have 7 movies vs. 3 A span from 1932-1964 vs. a span of 1975-1976 A broad range of subject matter vs. "The Power of Media" 7 different directors vs. 2 (two of these are Sidney Lumet films) I'll probably get the set and enjoy it (I enjoy all of Warner Bros. sets), but it's still a big disappointment after the set we got last year. |
I'm thrilled by this release! I've been waiting for Dog Day and All the President's for years to be updated. Throw in Network and I'm a happy camper!
|
I'm excited about all 3 of these. Putting them in the controversial classics series is kind of strange though because the sets are very different as MEJHarrison pointed out.
|
agreed....I am not so much dissapointed in these dvds as I am that we won't be getting more pre 50's classics
|
|
Nice!!!
