Which DVDs will you double dip when they come out in BluRay?

While it is not definite until the fat lady sings which format BR or HD DVD wins, lets just refer to them as "Ultimate DVDs" or UDs. My post isn't about the format war but about what movies in your collection would be worth ordering again.

I'm going to avoid ordering until I can get DTS HD or Dolby Digital Plus sound tracks - I spent too much money double dipping on my old DVDs to get better sound tracks etc.

Here are the ones I can spot in my current collection I will upgrade when they have a nice transfer with the best sound.

Armageddon
Batman Begins
BraveHeart
Colossus: the Forbin Project - Want WS
Conan the Barbarian - hopefully they will remaster the soundtrack
Die Hard
Die Hard II
Die Hard With a Vengence
Doc HollyWood - want WS
Fifth Element The
Gladiator
Hunt for Red October
Independence Day
Lethal Weapon
Lethal Weapon II
Lethal Weapon III
Lethal Weapon IV
Long Kiss Goodnight, The
Lord of the Rings: 1 The Two Towers
Lord of the Rings: 2 Fellowship of the Rings
Lord of the Rings: 3 Return of the King
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Mummy Returns
Mummy, The
Prophecy
Prophecy 5 - I want Widescreen
Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins - want WS
Scorpion King, The
StarGate
Starship Troopers
Terminator
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
True Lies
X-Men
X-Men 2
Zorro The Gay Blade - just want a decent transfer

For the record - I could care less about the extras - I'm upgrading to get better sound, better video, not to find out about the key grips breakfast or the make up artists' favorite movies. If they throw the extras crap in fine - as long as they don't have to diminish the video or sound quality or have the cut version of the film. Release a 2 disc collection for people who are more "serious" about movies than I am. They should be able to get the stuff they want too. I'm not against extras I just don't want them interfering with them releasing the absolute best video and sound possible. I've seen more of this lately and I'm thrilled. I see a lot of two disc movies that have nothing extra that I want so I can just buy the single disc version.

Very few as I'm not an audio/videophile.

So just LOTR EEs, Star Wars and other special effects/cgi heavy films that will really benefit the most from an HD transfer.

digitalfreaknyc 11-19-05 01:53 PM

oh my god. another day, another of the exact same HD threads...

Maxflier 11-19-05 02:02 PM

The Last Samurai
Batman Begins

I'm sure there will be others, but those are the main two i would pick up for sure.

Iron_Giant 11-19-05 02:31 PM

None, as long as the BLUE RAY player playes my old DVDs. My HDTV has a DVI connection, but my DVD player does not. So, if I get any better video out of a DVI player I will be happpy.

I have not Double Dipped on Regular DVDs, saved tons of money by not giving the studio's my money.

Matter of fact, there may be only a few Blue Ray DVDs I will buy new. I own about 350 dvds at this time, I picture buying only 10 to 12 Blue Rays a year.

Very likely every one of them mothers...yep, the whole library from the ground up again, oh how I hate myself sometimes...

Curse you and your vast bank account! :)

I suppose I'd replace MANY of mine if they didn't play games and just released all DTS 1080p DVDs right off the bat - all WS, all remastered. And yes that will take some work but they can't say - OOOH we had no idea that a larger capacity was coming or we didn't know which format would win. Cut the $@#! - remaster them and then just record them to whatever format or both formats and get it over with. You've already sold us the movies. The DVDs have been out for most movies for quite a while. If you want to make more money off the same DVDs get your act together and get the good ones out right off the bat or sales of the new format won't go anywhere and you'll have lost your opportunity to get us to double dip - cause I doubt many people will buy the new format unless it offers alot right off the bat.

Either all of them or none of them depending one which them releases them

Fincher Fan 11-19-05 06:38 PM

Alien 3, Seven, The Game, Fight Club and Panic Room. Depending on the timeframe probably Zodiac (or whatever the title ends up being).

Mr. Cinema 11-19-05 06:47 PM

When I began buying dvd, I didn't buy many to start out with. Same will go for the next format. But it will be even less because I'll still be watching my dvds. Depending on if they've been released yet, I'd likely choose from the LOTR Trilogy, Star Wars, Spiderman, Superman Returns, several Spielberg titles, the Pixar films, and ones that may not get 16x9 transfers on dvd: Armageddon, Scream, Crimson Tide, The Game, Enemy of the State, and a few others.

ShallowHal 11-19-05 06:50 PM

Maybe a dozen- I, Robot, Fight Club, Incredibles, the big ones. I'll spend the rest of my money gobbling up every single title I've ever wanted from people upgrading to the new format. The ED plasma I have now that will be moved to my game room will never know the difference. ;)

paulringodaman 11-19-05 06:56 PM

I need to finish watching my all my DVDs before I even think of the next gen

X 11-19-05 07:15 PM

The only one I can imagine buying again is The Fifth Element since I use it to test my equipment's calibration.

Kocheese99 11-19-05 07:35 PM

If only they did a sort of trade in policy like some stores do with video games. Bring in your Fifth Element and get $10 off the Hd version. Something like that would get me to buy more, but if i had to drop $20-$30 on a new version it would either have to insanely better and with more special features. Or it would have to be something that i don't have.

sataniko 11-19-05 07:38 PM

None that I can think of.

You really should add a few action films to your list for variety...

Gizmo 11-19-05 07:49 PM

The only thing that will make me upgrade is if Buffy/Angel/Firefly is rereleased with superior pictures. Until then Im happy with my DVDs

gutwrencher 11-19-05 08:29 PM

I'll let ya know in a few years.

Iron_Giant 11-19-05 08:45 PM

If the price of DVD is around $15, but a "Blue Ray" is around $25, DVD wins by a mile.

But, if they produce subpar DVDs on purpose and the price for BR is too high, I will not buy either.

critterdvd 11-19-05 08:46 PM

Buffy & Angel.... anything else would completely be based on price and extras

Fok 11-19-05 08:54 PM

Tough question, hopefully I will be able to hold back from double/triple dipping. For me it depends on the new extra's as well as picture and sound quality. Right now I'm pretty happy with most of the picture/sound quality I have.

ChrisHicks 11-19-05 08:58 PM

the only one I can think of right now would definately have to be Gigli.

Iron_Giant 11-19-05 09:23 PM

The only DVDs I have bought this year:
1. Star Wars, Episode III
2. My Fair Lady
3. Phantom of the Opera
4. AVP: Alien Vs. Predator

Given free from Blockbuster:
1. The Day after tomorrow
2. SWAT

Still want to buy:
1. Batman Returns 3 Disk version
2. Fantastic Four
3. Smallville S 4
4. Lois & Clark 1 and 2

As you can see, I am now only buying those I really want to watch over and over again.

Movies I would to buy in the Future in Blue Ray:
1. Superman Returns
2. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
3. King Kong (Maybe)
4. Spider-Man 3
5. X-Men 3

Qui Gon Jim 11-19-05 10:10 PM

I'll take HD versions of:
All six SW films
Any and all versions of the LotR trilogy
Matrix Trilogy
All Pixar films
All Disney animated "Classics"
Batman Begins
and a smattering of classics like GWtW and Citizen Kane.

Of course once I have a player, and hoping deals will be able to be found, I will buy HD/BR versions of new films that are released.
