Comment Re: new Who : Tommy/Quadrophenia Live DVD

The 'Tommy' Concert is shown in Full Screen but during the Billy Idol 'extra' on disc 3 ,clips are shown in wide screen presentation. The 'Quadrophenia' concert is in approx. 2:35 to 1 WS BUT IS NOT anamorpichally enhanced and I was Definately Bummed by both of these facts when I played it on my 16 x 9 set!
Who makes these assinine decisions when more and more folks are buying WS tv's !!!!
Extremely Frustrating-:(

That's unfortunate... I was looking forward to this one.

You don't want the Tommy show in widescreen - full frame is the original aspect ratio. Unfortunately, full frame was also the original aspect ratio of the Quadrophenia show, but they cropped it to fit the widescreen clips of "Jimmy" that play between (and unfortunately, often during) the songs.

The picture quality of the Quad disc is pretty rough - it's simply what was projected onto the screens during the show. Unfortunately, it's all that was left in the archive for that tour. None of the shows (except Hyde Park) were ever professionally recorded for release. The discs are still good to have, I think, as documents of those tours. They also have commentary from Townshend and Daltrey.

Interesting, this "visual commentary." I've never seen it done this way before. They sat Daltrey and Townsend (apparently at seperate times) in front of a green screen and videotaped their comments, then edited them into sequence. When you turn the feature on, you see them superimposed over the concert video.

You can turn it on and off at will throughout the shows.
