Dark City Director's Cut Coming in 2006

I was reading the bi-weekly edition of Roger Ebert Great movies on his website and this week he selected Dark City. At the end of the article he writes this:

Note: Ebert did commentary tracks for the original DVD of "Dark City" and the forthcoming 2006 Director's Cut.
Interesting indeed, although I don't see how this film can be improved.

Skoobooz 11-06-05 09:48 AM

That is interesting...it's also interesting that Ebert is doing yet another commentary on this film. Perhaps one could assume that this "Director's Cut" is somewhat substantial...at least enough to lure Ebert back in for a whole new commentary. Still, he must love this movie...I'm not sure if I've ever heard of a critic doing a new commentary for an upgraded DVD (at least, not of a 90's film).

Yeah, how much more could he discuss about the movie unless there was a lot he left out the first time around. Maybe after he was done with the commentary he thought "Man, I should've said this...and also this... and that. Crap, if they ever do a Director's Cut I'm so there"

basaro 11-06-05 10:05 AM

That would be cool, I've stuck with a copy until now. Maybe I'll have to get the new version if it comes out.

Maybe the director's cut will lose the (very unessecery) opening narration :)

I'd consider that a guarantee.

I still want to know why the ending to Dark City and Requiem for a Dream are both with Jennifer Connelly in a red dress at the end of a dock on a sunny day looking out into the horizon.

I just hope they remaster the image. It looks great, but it IS nearly 8 years old!

gutwrencher 11-06-05 11:09 AM

This was supposed to be one of the first HD titles to be released. Either way....I'm all over this.

The current dvd still looks great!

She's in the same exact shot, in three seperate movies: Dark City, Requiem for a Dream, and House of Sand and Fog. Each of the instances are supposedly just coincidence, how about that?

I'm all over a DC for Dark City, one of my favorite movies. Now how about that DC or SE of Event Horizon!

Perhaps the new Ebert commentary will simply be additional for whatever new scenes are added in, rather than an entirely different commentary.

Either way, it's a double-dip I welcome.

I just want this movie in a keepcase.

If I remember correctly, Ebert listed Dark City as his #1 movie for the year of 1998.

I'm not convinced that the quote means that he recorded a new commentary track for this release. It seems to me that they're just saying that they're putting his commentary on the new one too.

Or maybe he did like Billy Bob Thornton on the new Sling Blade: use the old commentary but edit in new comments over the additional footage.

Excellent -- I love this movie.

Sure wish I had thought of that! -wink-

I knew there was a reason why I wasn't picking this up. Can't wait!!

That's what I get for not reading all the posts. :)

Julie Walker 11-06-05 05:53 PM

Other than deleting the opening narration. What more could 'improve' this film? I think it was perfect as it was(narration I can give or take).

I'm still glad I picked this up for $5 a couple years ago. So the DC may be worth purchasing, but I will keep my theatrical cut just in case.

Scott Weinberg 11-06-05 06:03 PM

I love this movie, and I'd buy the upgrade JUST for the removal of the opening narration.

Curious to see what, if anything, Mr. Proyas would put back into the film. Cuz, opening blather aside, I think it's just dandy the way it is.

Julie Walker 11-06-05 07:17 PM

Same here Scott,so the only thing I'd be hoping for is the removal of the opening narration and that's it.

If we are lucky, that is what they are doing and labeling it the 'directors cut' to sell more new copies:)

But again,I'd hate to see the rest of the film tampered with, since it's perfectly paced and edited together as it is. I really don't see what else could be added and it never felt to be 'missing' anything.

There's also a similar scene in House of Sand and Fog... and a deleted dream sequence from A Beautiful Mind. For some (and apparently, coincidental) reason, directors love to film Jen on a dock or pier.
