Christmas gift ideas for older folks
Hello
I am trying to help a friend of mine, who is working on an article of good classic movies and television which have recently or will be released for the holiday season, find some good gift ideas for older folks. She wants movies maybe from the 30s, 40s, or 50s, as well as older tv stuff. I figured the new King Kong release would be great, but I need some good ideas, especially for the television stuff, as I don't know much about classic tv. Any help would be appreciated. |
As for upcoming classic television, I know that I'll be picking up Leave it to Beaver: The Complete First Season (November 22). There is even a cool limited editon version that comes in a lunchbox!

Kong is hands down the best thing coming... might try
movies Wizard of Oz Orchestra Wives The War of the Worlds: Special Collector's Edition (1953) Shirley Temple Collection, Volume 2: Baby Takes a Bow, Bright Eyes, Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm Looney Tunes collections Fox Film Noir Series Walt Disney Treasures (some good tv titles in this batch as well) tv adventures of superman bewitched season 2 (in glorious black and white of course) Andy Griffith Show Season 4 Combat! - The Battle Box (Complete Series) The Twilight Zone-the Definitive Collection box sets |
TV stuff...
Murder She Wrote Columbo McCloud McMillan & Wife Have Gun will Travel Wanted Dead or Alive |

I'm thinking about getting one of the Alfred Hitchcock boxsets for my mom.

thought this was obvious, but didn't see it mentioned...
The Golden Girls Season sets... |
How about BBC mysteries, like Rumpole of the Baily, Prime Suspect, Inspector Morse, or Hetty Wainthropp?
|
Maybe:
Val Lewton Collection Or maybe, Warner's Astaire & Rogers Collection (release a couple of months back) John Wayne's The High & the Mighty and Island in the Sky Released earlier in the year, but the Errol Flynn Collection would be nice. Some I Love Lucy on TV DVD might go over well too. |
Some of the old musicals should be on the list. There are a lot from the 50's-60's like Singing in the Rain, Hello Dolly, etc.
|
Another thought:
The 4th and final volume of The Best of Abbott and Costello was recently released. The first 3 Volumes have had price drops. A gift of all 4 Volumes would be nice. As a bonus, you could add the MGM releases of their films: "Dance With Me Henry" and "Noose Hangs High". |
