War of Worlds: Why so cheap?
I find it very interesting (and a little exciting) that War of the Worlds is very cheap when it comes out this Tuesday (9.99 at Best Buy and 8.99 at Circuit City). Usually movies like this (2 disc set) are like 15 when they come out and then go up to 20 bucks and then gradually over time the price falls off.
And then there's news that discs are going to go a lot cheaper even before Black Friday occurs. Anyone think discs are going to get cheaper? Is this a trend? Usually this happens to a particular title when a Special Edition comes out. Could this also be because HD-DVD / Blu-Ray discs are around the corner and manufacturers need to make room in their warehouse? Just thought this may be an interesting topic. |
Are you talking about the 1953 film or the new Tom Cruise movie? I am not surprised that the 50s version is coming out at this price since there isn't really that high a demand from your average consumer I would guess. Just adding to the hype for the Cruise flick.

The reason it's cheap is that they are warming people up for the 2005 release which is soon to come. Think of it as a "pre-sell."

I noticed the low price as well. I don't know much about this certain DVD, but the price certainly entices me. I really hope we see cheaper prices.

That's the single-disc 1953 War of the Worlds that is coming out for $9.99 this week (and that price isn't really surprising at all for a Paramount genre catalog title). The 2-disc DVD of the 2005 production will be out on 11/22/05 (along with widescreen and fullscreen single-disc versions).

As others pointed out, this is for the '53 version. I can't wait to pick it up. The review I read at DVD Journal said the source print is flawless and the colors are vivid. Some nice extras make this a very nice release and a bargain at that.

Paramount Home Entertainment has been giving a lot of catalog re-issues lower retail prices.
EX: Tommy Boy and Clueless' SEs have SRPs of $19.99 US. Most retailers then discount that price to around $13-$15. War of The Worlds '53 has a retail price of $14.99 US. So most retailers can discount it around $10 or less. |
I remember watching the original War of the Worlds and being really impressed, and a bit surprised, by it. This is interesting to me, considering I was born nearly 20 years after it came out.
I never saw the Cruise one and don't plan on it. All his odd behavior made me lose interest in seeing it. |
Actually the original is way better than the cruise one, Hollywood sure has a way of fucking up classics
|
Agreed. George Pal is godly.

You mean where it says "The Original Version" right on the case...you missed it?

I was very happy to see the '53 WoW coming out for $10, I'll be picking this up at BB along with Office Space :)
As others have said, there's several really shiney reviews about this release, as far as the quality of the video, so looking forward to it! |

I have the original DVD of the '53 War Of The Worlds, and I'm happy with it. It's not that I don't want to buy a new cleaner version of it, but it's getting to that time of year where a lot of goodies is coming our way every week. Especially November 22nd, no way I'll afford everything I want to get on that date. But ten bucks is a reasonable price for an old film and I'm glad they didn't charge the consumer 15 bucks or more.

Just flip your old version for the new one. You could still get $10 for the OOP on eBay.

$8.99 pricematch - $3 bb bucks = SOLD!

Got mine today. Almost bought the old release a few times over the years but never did.

I'll be buying this one and skipping the Spielberg version.
