"Midnight Cowboy"...how bad do we need a SE?

I have been putting off watching my R1 because it is non-anamorphic.
Can't we get a better release with extras and the works...at least before Jon and Dustin are too old to talk?

Is the R1 cut, since it says "R" and being this movie is infamous for originally being "X" or was it just re-rated?

There is only one cut. The rating was shifted in the late 70s from X to R.

And I am with you, this is an amazing film that deserves a lot more then what it got but, sadly, with MGM owning the release rights (now Sony) you have to wonder if anything will be done.

The heck with it. It's not like the film won a Best Film Oscar or anything ... nor did it have any memorable performances or stars ....

I've held off buying the current one hoping that someone - anyone - anywhere - would release a great SE.

Do you know what the cut was? I always figured it was just re-rated due to changing times and it was not enough for an "X" rating anymore.

"One cut", as in only one theatrically-released version of the movie.

I have had this information for a few weeks, but keep forgetting to post it. An alumni for my film school works for a company that among other things produces DVD features and he updated us on what he had been working on recently. It turns out that one such thing was, as he put it, a Midnight Cowboy 35 Anniversary SE (the only problem by my figures is that it has now been 36 years). Anyway thought I let you know.

I'm sure we'll get this R1 sometime soon.

I liked the movie for Dustin Hoffman's character but Jon Voight, wow, has he ever played a likeable character?

Just wondering if there's any news about this release. Should be announced fairly soon if it's really coming in December.

^^ If it's an R2 release you might want to check the International Forum.

I don't think that Sony really cares about its MGM library, except for the new Bond and Rocky projects. They seem more interested in promoting other products, like Blu-Ray or the PS3. Their stock quotes have been trading low and they recently announced a 10% workforce reduction.

While we may very well get an R1 release, that doesn't mean that we'll get the same extras. There are several instances where UK releases have exclusive features, such as the Carpenter/Piper commentary on They Live - this title was recently re-released in R1, but still bare bones.

Another example: the R2 edition of The Deer Hunter has an exclusive commentary by Cimino that is not on the recent R1 edition.

No, I don't think I would count on the R2 edition being duplicated for R1.

I hope this isn't just a re-release, Sony is the king of worthless re-packs. If it's anamorphic and anything like the R2 release that was announced, I'll be happy. Thanks for the info, I'll keep my ears open on this one.

From dvdforums.com, as reported on HTF:
From Sony/MGM you can expect a R1 Midnight Cowboy (Collector's Edition) on 21st February 2006. This 2-Disc set includes all-new extras including all-new documentaries, a tribute to Director John Shlessinger and new interviews with Dustin Hoffman, John Voight and more. It will be Digitally Remastered from an All-New High Definition Transfer and includes a collector's booklet.

I actually like the mystery that this film commands and I'm not sure I want any really in depth documentaries on it (ducks the nasty replies...)

you must not have a lot of DVD's then. plus, a lot of times i think extras adds to the enjoyment of a great film.
