I just read an article announcing the arrival of these new dvd formats to arrive in spring 2006. Many hollywood studios have already announced the new format that they chose for their 2006 dvd releases. Will they still be releasing new titles in standard dvd while we upgrade our dvd players and Playstations or will I have forgo renting and buying new dvd movies till I get a new computer and a Playstation 3?

I will not be replacing any of my current dvds. I've replaced nearly 70 VHS tapes and I refuse to do the same with my dvds. I've got 274 dvds and the buck stops there.

all your disc will be backwards compatable. No need in tossing out/trading off. it is also still a long time before the format will take off. Many Home theater enthusiast are waiting for the clear winner (though daily we see it swinging one way) For the non home theater enthusiast. Many don't own a television set capable of doing them any good with it. This may be the next big thing, but it might be the laser-disc to vhs situation. One is far superior in quality, but that doesn't mean it will be embraced across the board.

On a side not, I saw in Home Media Retailing that the first HD player is out now. SOme adult film company put it out, and it pretty much only plays HD porn, and pubic domain stuff. It was backwards compatable though, and only around 250 bucks. I can't find the article online, and won't retype it out of my magazine. But its the one with the footballers wife show on the cover. There was also a full page ad in the back for a HDDVD title for some pirate porno

Agreed. You get the thread, and then the recycled opinions of people buying/not buying their titles and the invariable dipshit that says HD will do nothing for older movies and the other dipshit that says DVD is not all that far off from HD etc etc. Seriously, do a search.

Many of the Hollywood studios are converting to the new formats of present and futur new releases starting in spring 2006 such as

Universal and Warner Brothers will use HD-DVD
Walt-Disney, Lion Gates and 20th Century Fox will use Blue-Ray
Paramount will use HD-DVD and Blue-RAY

The one thing I learned from this thread is that Cameron seems up-to-date on his porn.

Kinda ironic when coupled with your statement about an HD-DVD porn player. ;)

incorrect. at the moment, only universal will do HD alone...and that too will change soon.

While some previous threads had people who actually sounded angry about the new formats and spending money blah blah blah, I'm stoked. I love improvements in technology. While my big screen is only a couple of years old, I have no problem moving it to my bedroom or selling it on e-bay (for whatever I can get) in a couple of years when good HD 1080p 60fps TVs come out. Besides, my current TV is only 65" it would give me a nice excuse to get something in the 70-80" range.

I'm also looking forward to getting a nice preamp that supports Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD. I'm just hoping the studios aren't as stingy about releasing movies with good sound right off the bat.

And of course a player for all this goodness!

Blu-Ray tipped to win DVD format battle

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Forrester Research on Wednesday declared Blu-Ray, a new DVD format backed by a group led by Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news) as the winner in an increasingly heated battle over next-generation DVD technology.

"Two groups are competing for control of high-definition DVD formats to be launched in the spring of 2006. After a long and tedious run up to launch, it is now clear to Forrester that the Sony-led Blu-ray format will win," said Forrester Research analyst Ted Schadler in a report.

Earlier this month, Paramount Home Entertainment said it would release high-definition movies in the Blu-ray format.

Paramount, a film studio owned by Viacom Inc., had previously said it would release titles in a competing DVD format called HD DVD that is endorsed by a consortium of electronics makers including Toshiba Corp..

Paramount's move to also support Blu-ray was prompted by the failure of the two factions to join forces before players went on sale, industry sources have said.

Schadler said only one format can ultimately win in the market.

"Unless the HD-DVD group abandons the field, it will be another two years before consumers are confident enough of the winner to think about buying a new format DVD player. In the meantime, they will expand their video on-demand, downloadable video, and Internet viewing habits," he said.
