CRITERION or NOT??? ~~ SEE HERE ~~~

Criterion Bootleg Delimma.... Here is a good example of a Criterion Knock-off.

I have scanned both an original and a boot. Once you click on the link Expand the picture to Normal size by hovering over the image and clicking the icon on the bottom right. Can you see the difference? 1st and foremost the top is the bootleg. Notice how the entire front of the DVD is entirely printed in Black and only the Metalic is shown? A Criterion will always have a Metalic mirror like ring on the underside. There is also print and what looks like a barcode. I wanted you to see the difference up close. It is a large file so wait on it to load. Your thoughts?

My thoughts...people should only be worried about Criterion knock offs of Out of Print titles.

:hscratch: ah ok

Somebody bootlegged an Armageddon Criterion?

...why?

Okay so what if this title goes out of print one day and you own it or you think you own it and come to find out you bought a bootleg... Don't you think it is nice to know what you are looking for when purchasing Criterion?... With that being said, I believe people should be worried about ALL Criterion Boots.... No?

It's called organized crime my friend...... This is one of their #1 funding operations....

bboisvert 10-12-05 05:36 PM

How is this a "Delimma"?

Seems pretty disorganized to me...

Why on earth would they make a bootleg of a movie that is currently in print, has another in print version available, and is NOT considered one of the greatest movies ever made?
:hscratch:

Considering I would have to go way, way out of my way to buy a bootleg. That's what I'm trying to say, just click on dvdplanet.com and bam legal Criterions! They aren't diamonds!

Okay, for starters, welcome to the forum. Next, a bit of advice: read around a little before you make assumptions. Everybody here is familiar with Criterions, both authentic and bootlegged. My comment was a facetious one, coated with a thin layer of sincerity. It's wholly illogical to bootleg an Armageddon Criterion. As it's been pointed out, that release is readily available, new and sealed, in most B&M stores and nearly all online outlets. You could even head over to eBay, and be forced to search long and hard to find a bootleg Armageddon Criterion. Supply and demand drives the bootleg market. This title would not make a fiscally wise bootlegging opportunity. So, I'll ask again, why would anybody make a bootleg Armageddon Criterion? Entirely senseless.

Furthermore, I sincerely doubt that the world is so overrun with Armageddon CC buyers and bootlegs that this is an issue deserving of it's own thread.

First, is this really organized crime's #1 funding method? Has prostituition and drugs really lost out to DVD Collectors?

Second you said in the first post that Criterion will always have a mirrored ring. I thought there were several of the early films (like Salo) which use the white frosted ring. Hey I wonder if anyone thought to bootleg Salo yet?

The ones with the frosted white rings are the bootlegs. The one in this guy's collection, with the mirrored ring, THAT'S the authentic one.

Suckers!

The Armaggedon Criterion bootleg I made looks a lot better than that one.

1st and last my intention of this whole discussion was not for it to end up like this. Why people make bootlegs of "in-print" DVDs is beyond me. Maybe they are being distributed all over CHINA right now as we speak. Or Hong Kong. Or on Ebay - ( I have personally and purposely bought fishy items one ebay just to see if it is real and what is not... Call me crazy but what I have learned is more important. One example, The Aviator - this is not OOP yet a bootleg of this movie it being mass distributed all over the world. Especially on ebay... and other new auction websites it is even worse. If you do your research at www.MPAA.org you will find a section on organized crime and bootlegging (mainly other countries) It's actually pretty scary so, I'm not going to elaborate. With all this being said. This information I have presented was simply for an FYI. Heads up peeps... thats all...

Well, it is the greatest movie of all-time. What do you expect?
