I just started collection the Star Trek tv show's this summer, (all of them). Not only are they expensive, but I only buy them if I can still find the Best Buy bonus disc with them. So far I have been pretty lucky with this, except concerning TNG. I can't even seem to find the ones without the disc in store! I guess I'm going to have to ebay the discs I really want, but I have benn watching nearly every one go for $40 a pop.
The Walt Disney Treasuers are also a pain to collect. Luckily I have bought every single one since they have been released. But now that people now how rare then can get, when a new wave comes out I just buy them all at once. This get can pretty expensive seeing as how I like to space out my purchases. Aside from that, like others have said, Criterions can be a bitch to due to the high price tags. I can't just go and buy five of them at once like I do with some "normaly priced" dvds. |
Unsolved Mysteries on DVD. Try and find all 6 at a retail location...not gonna happen.

I am going to go with The X-Files, do to the prices, and have held off on buying them for awhile now. But due to the recent price drops (Amazon.com especially), I have gotten hooked, S3 is on its way now...

I feel sorry for anyone who purchased the previous editions of Twilight Zone & Star Trek TOS, had to be a lot of money to eat. Personally, the one that would hurt me the most (though I'd really love it) would be if/when Sony starts releasing complete Three Stooges box sets.... I'd be stuck with a bunch of obsolete discs.

HBO series sets. With their high prices and short series runs, it comes out to a pretty high price/episode ratio.
On the other end of the price spectrum, public domain titles are tricky about collecting too. Sure, they don't cost much, but with a multitude of companies putting these out, there's the concern that you're getting the best quality available print available. |

As for hardest set to collect, as others have said, not many are hard if they are in print. I'd have to go with Hitchcock films though, since there are several versions of his early films that are in the public domain, but few sources that will tell you which version is the best. |
anime is definately the worst. 3-4 episode DVDs cost $25-30 each and just about the time you finish collecting the series a box set or collector's edition set comes out.
