When VHS 'first' came out, they were 'priced for rental', weren't they? I can't imagine too many people randomly choosing to grab a 70$ videotape while waiting in the checkout line.

Probably a variety of reasons:
* easier to ship and make sure they're stocked [probably easier/cheaper to have staff to stock new releases Monday night rather than Sunday night];
* stores are more likely to have management available to recieve shipments Sunday night or Monday day;
* many people shop on weekends, so making 'new release day' a Tuesday gives more motivation to come out on a day they normally wouldn't; like how a club/bar rarely has 'free cover charge' night on a Friday or Saturday, and why 'happy hour' is 4-7 or something like that.

Exactly what I was thinking.

And probably the same reason that some blockbuster movies open on Thursday. They can get the super-fans to see the movie twice during the opening "weekend".

I don't know the reason, but I'm glad it's on Tuesday. It gives me a reason to look forward to Tuesdays. Every other day has something going for it. Monday - starting fresh on the week. Wednesday - Halfway point, just two more days till the weekend (Plus Lost is on). Thursday - Friday eve, everyone's in a good mood since it's "almost Friday". Friday - party party party. Saturday - see Friday. Sunday - weekend recovery day, sleep till 3pm.

So now Tuesday can have its own thing. Tuesday - DVD Day! (and 2.99 footlongs at Subway)

the reason for releases on Tuesday actually dates back to October 29, 1929, five days after the United States stock market crash of Black Thursday, when general panic set in and everyone with investments in the market tried to pull out of the market at once. This week and its aftermath marked the start of the Great Depression in the United States. Black Tuesday is often cited as the worst day in Stock Market history.

so in order to alleviate the panic that set in and the utter financial dismay of an entire country, Tuesday is set aside to bolster the economy with new releases and thrive from the ashes of yesteryear.

Some big (or at least, intended by the studio to be big) DVD releases happen on Fridays, as well.

Yes it is. I wish all the video games came out on Tuesdays as well. When I worked at Best Buy, people would call constantly asking "Do you have Tekken vs. Marvel vs. Pokemon 6, today's the release date." I'm like, the release date is whenever we get it in douchebag.

This is why Best Buy is so highly regarded for customer service. ;)

CD's were released on Mondays up until 1988. I clearly remember buying many new releases on Mondays from 85 to 88. I don't recall a clear reason ever being given at the time. It was just universally agreed upon by the film and music industries to shift to Tuesdays.
