New "Plan 9 From Outer Space" DVD

From mst3kinfo.com:

The next movie Legend Films will release in colorized form, featuring commentary by Michael J. Nelson, is the legendary PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE.

But as they complete the project, Legend is inviting fans to bid for a chance to be a part of it. From Sept. 29 through October 5, the company is sponsoring an eBay auction that will give winners a chance to have their photo or name inserted digitally into the movie.

In one auction, you can bid to have your photo displayed on a bedroom wall frame during the infamous Bela Lugosi attack scene. In another, the winning bidder will have his or her name engraved on a tombstone in a cemetery scene.

The resulting DVD will go on sale on Legend's web site in December, and will hit store shelves in 2006. In addition to Mike's commentary track, other special features will include "the lost Plans 1-8" (whatever that means) and "never-before-seen home movies of Ed Wood in drag." Wow.

Thoughts?

I thought the MST3k people always resisted doing Plan 9 because they said it was too easy of a target.

I love Plan 9 From Outer Space and colorizing it would lose a great amount of the "film on the cheap" charm that permeates an Ed Wood movie.

I'm also not a big fan of inserting stuff into someone's movie. I know I know... we're talking about Plan 9 From Outer Space. While it's not a classic movie in the strictest sense, it's still a classic to me.

Wow, great stuff!

Should be a lot of fun.

colorized.....

I'm a fan of the film...but I'll pass. I liked the colorized Reefer Madness, mainly because I was a stoner at the time and desired to see purple haze and nice color ganja smoke...so I thought that it worked pretty good. but I'm really not that impressed with Mike's solo comment tracks. Rather dull if you ask me.

I'll just hold onto the current version.

The bonus features look great, but I don't like altering the film by adding the text/picture. Check the auctions: http://stores.ebay.com/Off-Color-Films

It looks like they are even letting people use it for advertising space!

Lovely... I'm sure Golden Palace Casino is just waiting to snipe.

I'm happy with the Image Entertainment disc for Plan 9 From Outer Space...plus, I would never buy a DVD with a colorized version of a film/television show on it.

Rockmjd23 10-01-05 05:48 PM

Undecided whether I'll pick this up. Image has a lengthy documentary on theirs.

That eBay auction also has a look at the cover art:

The special features look pretty good. For $10, I'd consider adding this to my Ed Wood collection.

I'm not a fan of colorized films either, but these Legend releases are pure camp and they include the B/W version. Anyway, I'm buying this for Mike Nelson just like all the rest.

No Tor Johnson (on cover)= NO SALE!
BTW: What a waste of time, $ ,effort & "talent" Smelson is engaged in with Legend Films.
Then again, I'm in the Joel camp.

Desecration. I don't care what movie it is. No messing with other people's films!

Well, gotta admit... they were deleted.

This is getting more and more recoculous. Mike Nelson never was that funny, and these films just twist the knife in the old MST3K wounds.

Also, doesn't it seem hypocritical that the same movie fans who demand OAR are more than happy to buy colorized versions of these films? Especially ones that have been doctored like this release? I just don't get it.

All of Legend's releases have the B&W version as well as the colorized, and the picture quality is usually about as good as you'll get on any other release for these older movies.

I thought the auctions would be going for alot more. Maybe people are waiting until the end like most ebay auctions.

This is more of a fun release. There's a already a definitive version of the film for people who really care about it, and this is for the people who wanna watch a silly movie with some silly extras. The colorization or other minor changes really don't make a difference when you're watching what was once named the worst film of all time.
