The Man Who Fell to Earth - Criterion Collection

I saw the DVD at BB today. What a gorgeous set! The packaging is similar to the Videodrome Criterion except the box is wider to accommodate a novel.

I don't know much about the movie but the Criterion packaging looks tempting...

I was wondering about a comparison to the AB release. There is nothing at dvdcompare.net which Is where I ususally get my info.

Well, just to chime in on the aesthetics of the film: it's slow paced and keeps the audience kind of distant in an odd but appropro manner. But I really grew to really appreciate it in recent years, so get it and watch it more than once. Bowie gives one the best performances of his acting careers in it (mayeb the cocaine helped. Hmmm... I bet the commentary's going to be interesting, as it features Bowie). Can't wait to get it as soon as I get my Amazon rewards coupon from my credit card next month!

Criterion's video transfer was supervised by Nicholas Roeg. Anchor Bay's video transfer was supervised by some random guy from Anchor Bay.

On the other hand, Anchor Bay gave the movie Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 remixes, while Criterion has opted to include only the original Dolby Surround mix in DD 2.0. Again, the Criterion disc was supervised and approved by Nicholas Roeg. The Anchor Bay disc was not.

Are they any pictures of the packaging? I have to say, the Videodrome release is one of my favorite Criterions, just because of the packaging.

I can't find a pic. The package is similar to Short Cuts which has a book and digipak inside a box, except in the case of TMWFTE, it's a double alpha case instead of a digipak, so the outer box is a little wider.

Think of the Jaws 30th anniv edition packaging, with a double alpha case instead of a regular one, and a better box.

Why does it always have to be difficult? The better video transfer with original sound and those supplements or the surround mix and the AB supplements? My collection takes up too much space as it is; having 2 copies of movies is getting too hard.

Already have the AB, but can't pass up Criterion! Plus, it doesn't hurt that this is one cool flick.
