Voting is now CLOSED
Welcome to round two of the DVDTalk Draft Tournament! In this thread, the players drafted a roster of ten DVDs each. Now, it is up to you, the DVDTalk community, to vote on who has the best collection. We are now in round 2 of this single-elimination tournament. In order to vote, you need to reply to this post telling me who you think has the best roster. Your vote will not count unless you vote on every pair! Players in the game are also allowed to vote. Optionally, they are also allowed to post to this thread telling everybody why they think you should vote for their collection. So, let the voting begin! The polls close exactly 24 hours after the timestamp of this post. Match-ups will be listed in the first reply to this post. Good luck to all the participants! |

My votes:
1. jfrost 2. exharrison 3. ryuryu2949 4. RyoHazuki 5. Cleaver (Cameron: Pete & Pete? What? But I like the DS: Spike Jones choice) 6. dollfins1 7. slop101 8. obscurelabel (Spinal Tap CC--what a great commentary) |
1. Drexl - Got to go with Amélie and Moulin Rouge. Other wise Die Hard would have won me over.
2. Franchot's - I was happy to vote for exharrison's collection last time, but as a current Harrison, Franchot has the better selection with Casablanca, Cuckoo's Nest, Treasure, Schindler and North by Northwest. 3. Mhepburn20 - It's a little too Criterion heavy, but Doinel, Notorious, Amadeus and Lawrence are favorites. And I just can't vote for Old School. 4. Joe Molotov’s - The first really rough choice for me. RyoHazuki has Band of Brothers which is probably the prize of my collection. But Joe has Lawrence, Once Upon a Time, Seven Samurai, Matrix and Christmas Story. Even though I have to give up Band of Brothers, there's just more juicy goodness in Joe's. 5. cleaver - Another tough one that just came down to who has more good titles. And I'm out of clever things to say. 6. dollfins1 - Not a stinker in the lot. 7. slop101 - Brazil, Kane, Kwai, Deadwood, Bambi. I'd enjoy spending time with this group. 8. William Fuld - While I love the Three Colors trilogy from obscurelabel’s collection, it just feels a little too pretentious with half the collection being Criterion. Not enough diversity for my tastes. Plus Willy has Singin' in the Rain! |

1. jfrost--(Lord, save me from "Forest Dump.")
2. Franchot--(This guy has a wonderful and very timely collection. With the death today of Robert Wise (director of The Sound Of Music ), I think everyone should honor the memory of this great director by voting for Franchot's collection.) 3. Mhepburn20--(Lord, save me from "Old Skool.") 4. RyoHazuki--(Lord, save me from "The Schlocky Horror Picture Show.") 5. Cameron--(Lord, save me from "Gushmore.") 6. raining_helper--(Lord, save me from "JurASSic Park.") 7. darkhawk--(Lord, save me from that dude that made "Rushmore.") 8. William Fuld--(Lord, save me from "Salo.") As an incentive, I have some left over butterscotch candy from my opponent Sweet Baby James to give to people who vote for me. All the lists are very strong. I pretty much voted by finding the one film on each list that didn't just do it for me. |
1. jfrost - so strong 7-10
2. exharrison - we seemed to follow the same strategy 3. ryuryu2949 - that Rashomon pick came in handy here to match up with Ikiru; it says "Hey, my collection is diverse, too" 4. RyoHazuki - I love it. It comes down to one preference: The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly vs. Once Upon a Time in the West 5. cleaver 6. dollfins1 - sci-fi heavy, but getting 2 Spielberg flicks is a coup 7. slop101 - Bridge on the River Kwai and Goodfellas decides this one for me, my 2nd favorite war movie and 2nd favorite gangster movie (hint: I took my favorites) 8. obscurelabel - I've only seen a combined 7 of these movies and the Simpsons, but Silence of the Lambs Criterion is just a cool DVD to have |
1. jfrost

Well I thought about seeking revenge against those who wasn't with me in Round 1, but I'll try to harbor no grudges and be a good sport.:)
1. jfrost-Spirited Away sealed it for jfrost and I must hold Forrest Gump against Drexl. 2. Franchot-I can't support The Abyss and Franchot has one of the strongest collections. 3. Mhepburn20-it is a little too much top heavy with Criterion, but it still wins out(a very tough call). 4. Joe Molotov-another close call. Picking the proper versions of LOA and Apocalypse Now and the inclusion of Twin Peaks won out. 5. cleaver-god damn, these are tough calls. I like your collection slightly better although Rushmore is a little shaky for my tastes. 6. raining_helper-I must support the risk you took in picking a few horror films. 7. darkhawk-anyone that can have a list filled with classics and still put Big Trouble in Little China on it garners my vote. 8. William Fuld-another toughie. 2001 and Clementine won me over. For those contestants that I did not vote for, you have my sympathy. Almost all of my picks were 51-49. It really could have gone either way. Good luck to all.:) |
My strategy, if I have one, is similar to IDrinkMolson's: choose mostly prominent OOP titles. The Criterions are some that are pretty well known, I think, and the ones up to 8. are all OOPs that I have seen with more or less premium asking prices. The quality of the DVD wasn't my main consideration, just its status as a collectable.
To match the rules for the kinds of choices allowed, for my last two choices I picked <strike>whatever I could think of at the time</strike> a great boxed set and a classic TV show. |
1 Drexl’s Collection
2 Franchot's Collection - hardest one for me this time...Franchot by a nose. 3 Mhepburn20’s Collection - a close one too...The Adventures of Antoine Doinel tipped it. 4 Joe Molotov’s Collection - Joe by a length... 5 cleaver’s Collection - it was hard voting against Metropolis and The Kids are Alright but T2, Godfather and The Sting won out. 6 dollfins1’s Collection 7 darkhawk’s Collection 8 William Fuld’s Collection - the easiest one for my this time....OOP doesn't mean good. Also, Fudd had Mulholland Drive. |
