Carlito's Way UE

Has anyone found this at their local stores? I could not find today at BB but see that Amazon has available.
I recall a similar problem with it's last release as well; they always mishandle this title for some reason.

DVD Giant 09-13-05 03:56 PM

Its not out till the 20th

U6C84 09-13-05 03:57 PM

In Best Buy's system it says it isn't out until 9/20.

But all the websites say it came out today (9/13). So some best buy's just didn't put it out because of what it says on their system.

I love dvds 09-13-05 03:58 PM

I saw it at Wal-Mart. Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact price, but it definitely was under $20.

ScottsDvds 09-13-05 03:59 PM

My Best Buy had some in the drama section for $16.99.

dtsguy3407 09-13-05 04:06 PM

This was my BB story today, Reader's Digest version
1) Web Site says local stores have in stock
2) No where on shelf
3) Clerk says their CPU says it's in stock as well
4) Good ol' insult the customer by looking in same places you've been doing the past 5 minutes
5) double checks the CPU which says it's released on the 20th...never occurs to her to question points 1 & 3 above and why push the issue with these dead brain cells known as BB workers?
I'm out the door.

M Polo 09-13-05 04:23 PM

My local BB and Circuit City both had this on the Drama shelves today. Picked up a copy, was $16.99 at BB. Nice slipcover, chrome and black matching the Scarface release.

movie diva 09-13-05 05:24 PM

I picked it up at my local Best Buy in Torrance, CA the one on PCH and Hawthorne, they had atleast 50 copies

dgc 09-13-05 05:40 PM

How does this release differ from the prior collector's edition?

Legolas 09-13-05 06:04 PM

Original -- Production Notes Talent Bios, Film highlights, Theatrical Trailer

Collector's Edition -- Anamorphic, The Making of Carlito's Way, Photo and Poster Gallery

Ultimate Edition -- Anamorphic, Deleted Scenes, Brian DePalma on Carlito's Way, The Making of Carlito's Way, and more (whatever that's supposed to imply)

nonametofame 09-13-05 06:43 PM

are there any reviews for this? Most importantly, how does this release stack up a/v wise? Anyone with a copy, please post any info you can. Thanks

Thanks for the info. That's a poor excuse for an "Ultimate". I'll pass.

Let's revise this accordingly:

"Collector's Edition -- Anamorphic, "The Making of 'Carlito's Way'", Photo and Poster Gallery, Theatrical Trailer (2.35:1 non-anamorphic letterboxed -- washed out, but sharp)

Ultimate Edition -- Anamorphic, Deleted Scenes (approx. 8 minutes), "Brian DePalma on 'Carlito's Way'" (approx. 6 minutes), "The Making of 'Carlito's Way'" (identical to the one found on the Collector's Edition, approx. 35 minutes), an original production featurette from when the film was initially released (approx. 8 minutes), the exact same Photo and Poster Gallery found on the Collector's Edition (I checked -- no photos are missing), and the theatrical trailer (1.85:1 non-anamorphic letterboxed -- a darker, murkier, softer print than the one used on the Collector's Edition)"

So, the only meaningful extras on the new release (other than a new DTS 5.1 track) are the Brian DePalma featurette, the original production featurette and the deleted scenes selection. In my opinion, the video is in every way identical to the Collector's Edition but, again, now the audio has been upgraded to DTS 5.1. YMMV, but I think it's a worthwhile upgrade. And in regards to the trailer being an arguable step down in presentation quality, the version found on the Collector's Edition (which I'll promptly be selling off) is also found hidden on my original 1998 DVD of SCARFACE: Collector's Edition, so I feel that I've lost nothing, only gained...

...oh, and you can check out comparison screenshots at www.dvdbeaver.com...

OldBoy 09-13-05 10:24 PM

got it at BB as well today.

Big Worms 09-13-05 11:04 PM

CC has it.

Willh51 09-14-05 12:11 AM

Came from Best Buy online today.

wm lopez 09-14-05 06:41 AM

Are the deleted scenes any good?
What do they show?

Mr. Cinema 09-14-05 07:17 AM

Considering the "Collector's Edition" wasn't out very long, I'm glad about this rerelease as I missed out on getting the previous version.

digitalfreaknyc 09-14-05 08:46 AM

any prices?

Mr. Cinema 09-14-05 08:49 AM

I think the retail on this is $22.99, so $16.99 - $17.99 is a likely price in store. It's $16.19 at DDD shipped.

DDD and DVD Empire both list this title as being "double sided". yippee, another Universal 2-sided release. They must have cut back their budget.

Filmmaker 09-14-05 09:13 AM

Yep, it's double-sided...not sure why that raises so much ire on these boards, but there it is...

My CC had it for $17.99...buyer beware...

Gonvik 09-14-05 10:23 AM

I'm actually having a problem with mine on one of my players. The disc freezes up during Chapters 18-19. I thought it was just mine but it seems someone else on the HTF boards is having a similar problem.

It plays fine on an older player of mine, but I only checked those 2 chapters. I hope there aren't a bunch of defects with this, I'm heading back to exchange it today.

digitalfreaknyc 09-14-05 11:33 AM

Is it dual-layered and double sided? if it's single layered, then Universal can kiss my ass.

Gonvik 09-14-05 11:43 AM

It's dual-layered/double sided.

sataniko 09-14-05 11:56 AM

Saw it at my local Wal-mart for $21.xx, unless I find it at a much better price I'll be happy with my Collector's Edition.

wm lopez 09-14-05 02:41 PM

Any body watch the deleted scenes yet?

bunkaroo 09-14-05 03:56 PM

I could be mistaken, but I think the 2003 release also had DTS. I have it at home-I'll have to check. I have the UE at home too, but hearing that people here and at HTF are having issues, I'll hang on to my CE for a while. Same goes for Blue Brothers.

I've never had more defective discs than I've had with DVD-18's. I remember how I went through two Fargo SE's before getting a good one. Wish they would go away.

digitalfreaknyc 09-14-05 04:10 PM

2003 R1 did not. Other regions DID get DTS. I have the Korean version.

bunkaroo 09-14-05 08:50 PM

My mistake. Not sure why I thought that. I'll have to watch the UE soon to make sure it works OK.

wm lopez 09-15-05 06:17 AM

Anybody know a good website that can give a complete review of this dvd, since nobody in this forum wants too.

Well you can't beat DVDBeaver's review of the Ultimate Edition and all previous versions of the dvd: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCom...arlitosway.htm

I didn't have any earlier versions of the dvd so buying this was a no brainer. I had a problem with the dvd I bought at Best Buy but I exchanged for another and everything seems to be working fine now.

dadaluholla 09-15-05 10:38 AM

I was going to get this but I don't want the dual sided crap disc, so I'll just find one of the old versions.

Same with Casino.
