'Totoro' Features Fanning Sisters
Author: STEPHANIE PRANGE
[email protected]

Call it the perfect typecasting.

Child sensation Dakota Fanning and her sister Elle lend their voices to Buena Vista Home Entertainment’s upcoming dub of Japanese animation master Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro.

Producers were looking for the perfect sister team to play the sisters in the 1988 classic and found it in the Fannings.

“They had a kick together,” said producer-director Rick Dempsey during a panel after the Hollywood Film Festival premiere of the dubbed film Oct. 23 in Hollywood, Calif. Other panelists included Ned Lott, producer/casting; and Cindy Davis Hewitt and Donald H. Hewitt, screenwriters of the English-language adaptation.

Producers said a behind-the-scenes segment on the DVD, due this spring, will show the Fannings working on the film and Elle learning from her more experienced older sister. While Dakota could laugh on cue, producers said, Elle took some tickling.

Buena Vista has offered dubbed versions of other Miyazaki classics, such as the Oscar-winning Spirited Away, to make them more accessible to young audiences.

As long as they keep the Japanese language track, I'm okay with this.

They'll keep the original Japanese track... all of the other Studio Ghibli releases have.

Yamadas was actually one of the later Ghibli films to be released in region 2. I believe Kiki's Delivery Service was the first Ghibli flick to hit DVD, in the summer of 2001.

I heard part of the contract between Ghibli and BV is that BV is not allowed to cut any part of the films. Perhaps BV is not allowed to remove the Japanese track too.

Princess Mononoke was originally not going to include the Japanese track until fans protested. So we know they can leave off the Japanese track if they want to. However, it would negatively impact sales to do so.

The original dub was licensed by Fox for their earlier P&S dub-only release, and Disney chose to use their own original dub or weren't able to license the existing one. Either way, the dub was most likely not what has delayed the release for so long.

nope. because that was released long before the contract with disney. It was a one off that miramax bought the american distribution rights to. THe disney contract came much later.

"My Neighbor Totoro
Howl's Moving Castle
Whisper of the Heart"

Good NEws. Having seen Howl's in a movie theater, I can't say that it's one of Ghibli's best, but it's still better than anything George Lucas, Tim Burton, or Steven Speilberg churned out this year.

Now If only Only Yesterday and On Your Mark can get released too.

Did anyone pick up Go! Panda Go! I've heard it was an earlier work that inspired Totoro. Is there a better version than the R1 that is available. Thanks.

Just a heads-up for Ghibli fans: In January, Turner Classic Movies is playing a bunch of Ghibli flicks. Specifically, on Thursday, January 26th, they are broadcasting a subtitled version of Only Yesterday at 8pm eastern and 12:30am (Friday). As they play movies in their OAR without commercials, here's your chance to grab Only Yesterday in case it doesn't come out on DVD (which I hope it does!)

I like Totoro's, but I think they could've done somewhat better with the Whisper of the Heart one. The background's fine, but the logo text leaves a bit to be desired. Then again, it's the one non-Miyazaki movie of the three, so it's not going to be the biggest seller anyhow.

I hope Whisper of the Heart sells well, since it's my personal favorite out of the Ghibli films. Miyazaki did write it and direct one segment.

You mean Panda! Go Panda, right? Not sure about which DVD is the best, but this UK DVD review, presumably Region 2, offers a different perspective (and sheds a little light on the film's history, too!).
