I am now Sylvester McCoy complete.

And now, Hartnell (released) complete.

All I need from the original run is Troughton's War Games, which is still $100+ on the secondary market. Really hoping it gets a reprint to bring that price down. And then the upcoming animations as they release.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, I mentioned a while back that I noticed the episode/story # list in the first post had fallen out of date. I'm interested in getting that caught up, is anybody else working on it? I just don't want to duplicate the work. If not, I'll take a run at it in the coming weeks.

Congrats on completing your Hartnell and McCoy runs. I have slipped and only picked up the 2 Tom Baker seasons that have been released on blu-ray and non of the other classic seasons.

Thanks, I can't bring myself to upgrade to the Blus. I know it would save so much space, but there's a lot of the DVDs I haven't watched yet. I'm pruning the rest of my DVD collection on eBay, so that'll make a little space.

Power of the Daleks is getting a new blu-ray with revised animation this month in the UK. Of course due to the COVID-19 shipping restrictions Amazon UK is not shipping the US and it will most likely not be released in the states.

Hopefully, most of this release will end up in a Season 4 Collection set at some point. As a completist, I'd like to get it but I really don't need it.

At least, that's what I'm telling myself.

Why are they going back to an already released title instead of working on something still unreleased?

Wow. I thought buying it earlier this year for $14.99 was a deal!

Best Buy has it back in stock, both to ship and at some local stores (for me at least):

Managed to snag one, but it was the last copy at the pick-up store I chose.

I feel kind of ripped off that I bought this for $14.99 a couple of months ago... :(

Thanks, snagged it. Nothing local so paid for the shipping.

Anyone know if the two animated things are included?

I've looked at some reviews and comparisons. This Youtube review goes into the "why" aspect a bit (animation studio originally had 5-6 months to do 9 months of work), and there's a comparison of a scene at about the 4 minute mark of the video:

Also, this comparison of about the first 4 minutes of the serial (no sound):

The animation appears overall improved, with more shots and animation in the new version. If buying it for the first time, the new version would be the one to get, but whether it's worth an upgrade from the original version is another question. Of course, completionists will want both.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

I'd rather they animate another missing story than redo one they've already animated, like those two episodes of "The Underwater Menace," or get a start of "Evil of the Daleks" or "Daleks' Masterplan."

I'm guessing they're doing these animations in anticipation of complete series blu-rays of the first six series.

Hartnell series one and two would probably be ready to go. I'm fine with leaving "Marco Polo" and "The Crusade" as telesnap reconstructions. The main drawing point for "Marco Polo" were the sets and costumes, and I'd rather have the episode presented in way that preserves that than animation. I'm not really a fan of the old "historicals" anyway, and find them boring.

They're making pretty good headway on the first and second Troughton series, and the third one is complete save for "The Space Pirates" after they animated the two missing parts of "The Invasion."

That mostly leaves Hartnell's third series, which is kind of a mess.

Hey, thanks for posting. Looks like something I want to get...but here is my dilemma and maybe some of you can help out.

So I keep getting conflicting information: are the new Blu-ray's region locked or not?
Every retailer clearly states these are Region B; but then I go on other forums where people swear they aren't, but then go on to say "well, I have a region free player" which is no help at all.

I have a PS3 for blu-ray playback, so does anyone in the US have it and can confirm the main program and special features are not region locked?

I'd much rather have the blu-ray but will stick with the US DVD if I have to.

I tend to use the "Region coding" tab on the blu-ray.com listing for a title to find reliable info. Not only are many of the posts explicitly testing the different regions, but other can vote on how accurate the post is.

The special edition looks to be all-region:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Docto.../#RegionCoding

Note that for Blu-rays, there's no way to set the player to "all region," so even people with players that can change regions would know if it doesn't play in the region they normally have the player set at.

Also, region code isn't the only possible worry for UK/EU imports. Sometimes TV shows are in 50i, which some US BD players and/or TVs have problems playing. I'm not sure about this release. I think there's a chance the feature is 24p, but some of the special features look to be 1080i, which means likely 50i for the UK release.

Edit, this list is really out of date, but it shows that a US PlayStation 3 can't play 50i content:

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

To everyone who tried to help me with my 4:3 box issue while watching the Tom Baker seasons on BD, I'm reasonably certain I've found the answer to my problem. I bought Salem's Lot on BD (still FS) and it was doing the same thing. By a sheer stroke of luck I happened into a setting on my LG TV called All Direction Zoom. Changing the Aspect Ratio from 16x9 to All Direction Zoom resulted in Salem's Lot filling up the whole WS on this TV. I have no doubt it will do the same for my Tom Baker seasons. I can just change that setting when I need to watch them and change it back when I'm done.

Thank you for trying to help, I appreciate it!

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

That's strange. I would think that these 4:3 fullscreen blu-rays would be natively 16:9 with black pillarboxes encoded into the image, so the tv and player should treat the image like any other 16:9 image.

What exactly does "All Direction Zoom" do?

It sounds like "All Direction Zoom" might just be like the regular "Zoom" on my tv, where, when you select it, it zooms to the point where a regular 4:3 image is zoomed so that the edges of the 4:3 image reach the edges of the screen, like what you would use to watch an old non-anamorphic widescreen DVD so that fills the screen and isn't windowboxed.

If that is what this does, you might be losing some resolution on the image.

Going back to the original discussion, These are the aspect ration setting options on his TV, according to the manual:

http://kr.eguide.lgappstv.com/manual.../settings.html

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...ae03fa4cb6.png
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...2a27800f3e.png
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/dvdtalk...98b77a8515.png

BTW, LG's manual pages are awful. They don't allow cut-and-paste. Just give me a downloadable PDF any day

Also, forget "losing some resolution in the image," I think kd5 is losing some image. Zooming in on the 4:3 image to fill a 16:9 TV means the top/bottom of the image is being lost.

^ I've always kept my LGs set to Just Scan. I haven't had an issue yet (knock on wood).
