Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

I hate to be one of those guys who tells you to get a multi-region player, but with Doctor Who it's really the best option. All of the UK releases are in print and available at decent prices; usually less than ten pounds each. Even with the exchange rate, it's a better deal than most of the still available US releases.

Also, in terms of DVD players, there's a good chance your player may be made multi-region via remote-control hack:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks

The main downside is that the UK DVDs would have little to no resale value in the US, or at least would be difficult to offload.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

I don't see my player on that list and there's never been many other titles to make me go region free.

I've been able to find a couple of my OOP titles here and there, plus I'm going to start stockpiling extra copies of classic Who I find in the wild as tradebait. I only need the 4, I think I can do it.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

An interesting alternative is that some Bluray players are regionfree for DVDs (not Blus though, you need to pay extra) so that might be a feature to look for if you eventually want to get a blu player.
Personnaly I do have a region free player but its only one out of 3 players in the house so that limits the viewing possibilities on those european DVDs. Plus if I want to lend them to friends its also a no go. So I try and stick to the R1 disks. I did get War Games on Pal/R2 though. And a few Hammer films (nice box sets that we don't have in North America).
I'm looking at getting Web Planet too if I can't find an alternative...

Power of the Daleks will be released in the US as a Barnes & Noble exclusive on January 24th. It'll included a color version of the serial.

UK is getting a Blu-Ray "special edition" version February 6th. Not sure if it'll be the same extras from the DVD edition.

I pre-ordered the UK Blu-Ray today. There's a limited edition Steelbook edition with 4 discs (2 Blu, 2 DVD). I couldn't resist.

BBC America is airing The Power of the Daleks as a limited series (one episode a week) starting this Sat, Nov 19.

I created a thread in TV Talk for discussing it as it airs:

Did The Movie go out of print too? I noticed the Amazon prices shot up.

Probably. It was recently re-released in the UK on blu-ray (don't get excited...it's just an upconversion). The fact it's now OOP might be an indicator that a US blu-ray (again, an upconversion) could be on the cards.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

The 50% off British TV sale has started at Barnes and Noble, so now's a great time to pick up any Who titles that you're missing.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

There's a few coupons that can be stacked with the sale. Looks like they expire 12/4. Discount is taken off one item.

25% Off - RFWVXNT5WERYA

20% Off - DECEMBER20, Y1MQRUTXUM497, X9ZQKX77B3W24

I used the 25% off code to pick up The Key To Time Special Edition for $40 (down from $99). Barnes & Noble has a few more sales coming up closer to Christmas plus a rumored 40% code. I may pick up some other Who box sets I'm missing.

My wife got me Earthshock for Fathers Day so I'm now Davison complete. I just need a few more of the OOP ones to be classic Who complete.

Congrats! I've been slowly picking up titles before more vanish. For the more expensive ones, I'll pick up the R2 versions.

Another version of Shada coming:

But now, Doctor Who: Shada has been recreated once more from scratch by BBC’s commercial arm, BBC Worldwide, with Tom Baker performing as the Fourth Doctor combining the original, remastered live-action footage with hand-drawn animation to be officially released on DVD, Bluray and digital download.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

I was in Barnes and Noble yesterday and they had signage up advertising a 50% off British TV sale from 12/1-12/18. Good time to fill in any holes in your collection.

This is active currently online (at least from the several I sampled).

This is a huge "I'll believe it when I see it" situation, but Best Buy has a listing for Doctor Who: Tom Baker - The Complete First Season on blu-ray:

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

So if the PAL tapes were at 576 lines of resolution, how well would that upconvert to 720 for Bluray?

This listing apparently first went up mid December:

FYE also has a listing:

An Australian retailer also listed a similar set:

I did some googling and best I can tell is maybe (store listings notwithstanding). If it's happening BBC Warner is keeping a tight lid on the news. We'll know for sure March.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

You're welcome everyone. I was waiting for a Special Edition release of Enemy of the World and Web of Fear because I knew one was coming one day. Right before Christmas, I thought "Eh, it'll probably never happen" and I picked them up for $8 each.

Of course a SE announcement follows a month (and change) later. Nice of them to give away the ending on the cover.

Re-Remastering Patrick Troughton’s Doctor Who: The Enemy of the World for New DVD Release

The BBC have announced a new remastering of the recovered and restored classic Doctor Who adventure Doctor Who: The Enemy of the World starring Patrick Troughton as The Doctor on DVD.

Released on 19th March.

Once five of the six episodes were thought lost. Recently recovered, a version was released in 2013, but Peter Crocker of the Restoration Team have been working on the episodes further since, to restore them closer to the original film.

“Recovering the Past – The Search for The Enemy of the World” – produced by Paul Vanezis.
A brand-new interview with the episode hunter Philip Morris, we hear how he tracked down the last surviving film copy of the serial to a dusty room in the African desert.

“Remembering Deborah Watling” – produced by Cameron McEwan.
Family, friends and colleagues pay tribute to Debbie Watling, who played Victoria Waterfield, companion to Patrick Troughton’s doctor.

Production subtitles on all six episodes written by Martin Wiggins.

I'm reckoning that they won't do a "Web of Fear" SE unless the third episode resurfaces.

Maybe a better telesnap reconstruction? Or, dare I say, animation?
