A quick look at DVDpriceCheck tells me that apparently the series is going through a re-package, so the earlier releases must be going OOP. According to them, Series 1, 2 and Complete Specials have all been repackaged so far.

My guess is they're chucking out those massive DigiPaks and maybe replacing them with thinner ones (or with plastic cases like they did in R2/UK's Series 1-4 boxset).

I got season one from Amazon when it was on sale for $20 a couple of weeks ago, and it came in a regular-sized DVD case (5-disc) with a slipcover.

Story #8, with animated episodes announced, The Reign of Terror, 12 Feb 2012

I hope this continues: the fact that we have the audio for every lost episode means they're not really lost in my book, and I've made it a point to avoid buying those DVD sets of the partial stories.

I seriously hope the Flash version of Shada has been converted to DVD Video and and doesn't require playback on some Flash player using our computers.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

It's not. You have to watch it on a computer. Space was the concern. There wasn't enough room on the set for a 150 minute converted version so they opted for the Flash version.

Check out the last few pages over at Gallifrey Base. The Restoration Team goes into detail there.

I don't have a membership there, and I have no use for forums that require a membership just to view anything.

Seems like a pretty poor decision. Flash can't be that hard to compress for DVD and it's already a 3 disc set, wish they could have done that better.

Valeyard, thanks for the link. Interesting heated thread. Doctor Who forums tend to have too many people with different opinions. Shada should've been something more special for the 50th Anniversary. Hopefully Ian Levine's Shada gets completed and released somewhere else.

agreed. watching something on my computer isn't as comfortable as on the big screen in my living room with plush seating. We've had the Flash version all these years and it's been cumbersome to load it up.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

Sorry about that. I forgot that Gallifrey Base is Members Only.

Basically what was said - Shada was only budgeted for 2 discs, not 3. Yes, the Flash version could have been converted for DVD but that would have required a 3rd disc which the BBC did not budget for. The 2 disc set was meant to contain only the VHS version of Shada and More Than 30 Years in the TARDIS. Including the Flash version is actually a "bonus."

From Steve Roberts, DVD Producer:

I would also add at this point that the BBCi Flash Shada was never even commissioned or budgeted for as a DVD extra on this release. The ONLY reason that it's on there at all is that I championed it, Dan was able to find a little extra budget and James Goss agreed to do a HELL OF A LOT of extra work with that budget in order to get it on there. As far as you are concerned, you're getting an additional item for the same price as you would have paid for the release as it was originally intended to be.

And, as usual, all we get for trying to make a release a bit more complete is page after page of complaints.

Oh yeah! That's a typical Doctor Who thread. A perfect example of what Who fandom has become. I've drifted away from it over the years. I love the show but not it's (hardcore) fans.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

Sorry, but I hate that attitude of "you should just be happy with what you're getting". Who on DVD has always commanded a premium price and in the 15th year of the format, to expect us to be able to watch something in Flash that could have easily being converted is just absurd.

DVD replication costs have surely dropped to easily affordable levels and this is the BBCs flagship show. I expected better.

But the cover art shows it to be a 3-disc set after all unless that's not accurate.

I think Shada release Disc #3 contains "More Than 30 Years in the TARDIS"?

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

Yeah. I guess they meant the budget called for 2 discs for Shada including it's own bonus stuff. "More Than 30 Years" is on it's own disc.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

I got the big gift set today. The box is actually pretty sturdy, and the art cards and comic are pretty nice. The sonic screwdriver is kind of cheesy thought. The series are the original digipack versions, and they aren't sealed inside the box, which disappointed me because I had planned on selling series 5 and 6 since I have them on blu-ray already.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

For the price I got it for versus the cost of getting the first 4 seasons and specials by themselves I am not complaining too much. I seems like a way for BBC/WB to clear out old stock.

Here's the sonic screwdriver that came with the set, which at the cost it's going for on Amazon seems kind of a ripoff:

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

Here are some of the details from the Shada set:

The Legacy box set contains three discs, the first two dedicated to Shada. The version of the story originally produced for the VHS video release assembeled from existing studio recordings and location filming along with new visual effects and incidental music by Keff McCulloch. Tom Baker provides linking narration for the scenes that were not produced. Also included, for viewing via computer is the 2003 animated version of Shada. paull McGann stars as the Eight Doctor with Lalla Ward reprising her role of Romana.

Disc 2 is devoted to extras. In Taken out of Time the cast and crew, including Tom Baker, Daniel Hill, director Pennant Roberts and production manager Ralph Wilton. Then and Now looks at the Cambridge location. Strike! Strike! Strike! reveals that Doctor Who was not the only to have been the victim of industrial action. Finally, Emma Price and Samira Ahmed look at the way women have been presented in Being A Girl.

The main feature on disc 3 is More Than Thirty Years in the TARDIS. Plus Remembering Nicholas Courtney, Those Deadly Divas,Doctor Who Stories - Peter Purves interview and The Lambert Tapes part 1.

Possibilities:

1. It has been discontinued.
2. They are going to release the episodes separately and are letting this slip out of print.
3. The current stock has been sold out and it hasn't been repressed yet.

Re: The One & Only DOCTOR WHO DVD Thread (8th Incarnation)

The stories in the Beginnings box set were released separately on the same day (An Unearthly Child & The Daleks/Edge of Destruction). An Unearthly Child is going for an insane amount of money right now.

Maybe they're gearing up for a re-release for the 50th Anniversary next year?
