I wanted to pose two questions I asked earlier in this thread and I think the 7th:

1. How is the quality of the new Doctor Who series? The Planet of the Dead just came out on Blu-Ray and was curious to see how the season sets stood up.

2. For a newbie (I am new to the original series), where is a logical place to start?

I think the best place to start is where so many of us did decades ago -- with the early Tom Baker stories.

Tom Baker is def the place to start. Id go with The Brain of Morbius as a starter.

Start with Season 1. Yes, there are a few questionable episodes, and the effects are shoddy (but as a 'Who fan you should be used to that!) but its got some great moments and a lot of set-up. Season 2 rocks from start to finish, and the effects were improved. Children of Earth...heh...

I'd already viewed Torchwood 1 & 2 on HDnet, but damn if the Children of Earth Blu-ray didn't just blow me away with its picture quality.

And I'm so glad Who finally made the leap to HD with Planet of the Dead...that Blu-ray looks fantastic, as well.

Ditto. Brain of Morbius is still my all-time favorite! If you watch this one and really like it, then I would also recommend the following "classic Who" stories (all Tom Baker as well):

Pyramids of Mars
Horror of Fang Rock
Robots Of Death
Ark In Space
City Of Death

I personally really like the following three episodes as well, however they do not always receive rave reviews, so I just consider them to be personal favorites:

Invisible Enemy
Invasion of Time
Destiny of the Daleks

As for other "classic" Doctors besides Tom Baker, the best story IMO would be
Caves of Androzani
which features Peter Davison as The Doctor. I'm not a fan of the Davison era at all, but this is a really good one and its in my collection.

As for the new series, I would rank them in this order:

Series 4
Series 1
Series 2
Series 3

Series 4 and Series 1 both have a vast majority of great episodes. Series 2 is about half and half: 50% great episodes, 50% weak episodes. And Series 3 is about 20% good episodes, 80% weak episodes. IMO, of course.

I want to say thanks to everyone that suggested I start from the beginning with Torchwood.

I wound up liking season 1 more than most (I'm assuming). I really appreciated what it was trying to do and liked that it took things in some different directions than what was expected. Apart from a bit of pacing with some episodes and the last episode of the season I thought it was top notch.

Season 2 continued to be good and interesting and it finished very strong with the last two episodes.

Then Children of Earth. Holy. Bloody. Hell. Five hours of non-stop awesome. Some of the darkest, most intense, action packed sci-fi I can ever recall seeing.

Just a heads up that I found two new listings on Amazon UK for DVD releases of the David Tennant specials:

Doctor Who - Mars and Christmas/New Year Specials (Jan. 11, 2010, list price 24.99 pounds)

Doctor Who - The Complete Specials (Jan. 11, 2010, list price 39.99 pounds)

So, as many of us guessed months ago, BBC Video are releasing a set with all 5 Tennant specials, and I'm sure the US version of both sets will also be available sometime in early 2010.

No information about DVD content yet, but it would be nice if the Complete Specials contained the Confidential for "The Next Doctor" (which is not on the single DVD release). Also, the BBC recently broadcast "Doctor Who Greatest Moments," three 56-minute episodes devoted to The Companions, The Doctor and The Enemies from the new version of Doctor Who.

Yeah, I said as much in my reviews of the first two, suggesting that a rental is best for the stand alones because this was inevitably going to happen.

Glad I waited on the specials. We tore through all four seasons of nuWho and have been bouncing around classic Who via finding various titles at the used shops near us. My wife is very eager to see more Tennant and was wondering when more was coming. I then happened to mention that they were also being released on Blu Ray and next thing I know she's price checking BluRay players on Amazon.

Fingers crossed that The Complete Specials aren't just repackaging of what's been released already. So far, I've only picked up Planet of the Dead on Blu-Ray. I've held off on picking up The Next Doctor hoping a better set would come.

The remaining Doctor Who 2009 specials will be out in the U.S. on February 2nd.

The Waters of Mars will be available as a individual DVD and Blu-Ray release. The two-part Christmas/New Years finale will be available as an individual DVD/Blu-Ray release as well.

There will also be a DVD/Blu-Ray release of "The Complete Specials" as well.

Me too. Here's hoping we get the Proms concert in dts rather than plain old stereo.

Wonder what they'll do with this episode on the Blu-ray set, considering it's not in HD.

It has been confirmed that Feb 2 is the release date for the full set of specials (as well as a few of the others individually). Will see both DVD and BR releases.

Man, I hope Bestbuy or someone else has another cool exclusive for the set.

Can't wait to get it. If its region free blu-ray and if other parts of the world have unique sets, ill buy.
