Director Has 'Fantastic' DVD Ideas

Director Tim Story thinks bigger will be better on DVD. He cut his comic book movie, Fantastic Four, down to a fast-paced 105 minutes for its hit theatrical release, but he has proposed an extended cut of the movie, in addition to deleted scenes as an extra feature, for the DVD.

“I feel like now people have seen the kind of fast- paced ‘get in and out’ version,” Story said. “We’re talking [about] only a handful of scenes that I might put back into the movie just to allow the movie to breathe a little bit.”

Extended cuts have become more common as studios look for opportunities to create additional, sellable versions of the same film. Many directors take issue with the term “director’s cut,” insisting that adding more does not necessarily make the film better. But Story is okay with creating additional versions with films under the right conditions.

“I don’t mind that, as long as I have the say so of what [is put back in],” he said.

Fantastic Four tells the origin of the team of superheroes exposed to cosmic radiation in outer space, resulting in each one developing unique powers. Most of the film’s visual effects are on display in theaters, but Story said he has saved a few for his extended cut.

“There are a couple of things with special effects in them that we actually finished up and then [will] put into the movie, so it’ll be interesting to see how people respond to it,” he said.

To complement or offer an alternative to the extended cut, Story also has plans for the standard array of DVD extras for Fantastic Four.

“There are going to be a lot of deleted scenes and commentaries, and we’re going to have a lot of special effects features,” he said.

Cool, but as with almost everything these days, I'm sure we'll get a bare-bones disc and the good edition somewhere down the road.

I see a definite double dip on this movie. They will use the same pattern like they did with Daredevil. It's a given nowadays that Fox will double dip on titles.

Hmmm, I don't know. I hope they release both versions at the same time, and that is *if* they have two versions. However, it sounds like from that blurb, that they'll release *just* the extended cut.

Exactly, which is why I will wait before I pick this up. I hardly pick up any new Fox movies the first week out any more.

And studios wonder why their sales are down.

I predict Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Kingdom of Heaven will also be Fox double dips.

A fast paced 105 minutes? Most sites I've read about the movie has the time as 2 hours, 3 minutes. Which is correct?

My guess is that the DVD will have both versions of the movie (seamless branching, possibly).

That would be the best way to do it (IMO). Of course, it does preclude the double-dip. We'll see. I dug the movie so I'm definitely picking it up on DVD.

So in other words, it will be like pretty much every other major studio release out there.

Like all new Fox releases, this will probably be a one disc release with the double dip coming in 2006.

I wanna say Yay, but I only somewhat liked F4 and I know that Fox will release a sucky version first.

It's almost 100% certain we'll get the two-disc unrated extended version a few months later.

Thanks for posting this info. I agree, though, that F4 is a definite candidate for the double-dip.

F4 was one of my guilty pleasures of 2005. I didn't think I'd like it based on the reviews, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would - despite its flaws. Considering its relatively strong hold at the box office, I suspect I wasn't the only one with this reaction.

I agree on all counts. I have every intention of getting this movie on DVD, but don't suspect that the best version will come out on 12.13.05. That sucks, as a big SE right in time for Christmas would be nice.

Yeah, I'll probably get it too. You're right - a big SE would be great at Christmas time. Maybe Fox'll do the right thing and release it since it would be during the holidays.

The way Daredevil was double-dipped, that wasn't too bad. If they do that with the FF, I won't lose too much sleep. Give us a good 2 disc set then the extended version of the movie by itself.

I really liked Fantastic Four - I had waited literally decades for an FF movie! It lived up to my expectations, well, it actually exceeded them. It was fun, and my whole family loved it.

I'll bite on the December release (my daughter really wants it on DVD asap) - but if they put out an extended version I'll double dip (reluctantly).
