Nightmare Before Christmas: missed opportunity?
With Corpse Bride hitting theaters 9/23, seems like now would have been an excellent opportunity to rerelease Nightmare Before Christmas in a nice new anamorphic-widescreen DVD set. The original non-anamorphic release is definitely showing its age. Anyone hear of any plans for a rerelease...?

In other regions where it is anamorphic, they've altered the aspect ratio (from 1.66:1 to 1.78:1).
I hope that when/if this does get an anamorphic release in R1, it is in the proper ratio.

The r2 Scandinavian release is in 1.66:1, and it's anamorphic. There's a review in English over here:

I think the R2 UK edition is anamorphic, but don't quote me.
while the current disc is great - in terms of supplements and DTS sound - for it not to be anamorphic is a head scratcher.

Definte missed opportunity. Then again, any DVD that should be anamorphic and is not is a missed opportunity. [cough] House M.D. [cough] C.S.I. Season 1 [cough] or stupidity as is with these two. No excuse.

Josh, on what type of display do you watch "The Nightmare Before Christmas"? If it is, in fact, a widescreen display, then I'm always shocked to hear people say they are "pretty happy" with their current non-anamorphic discs. If it is a standard display, then I understand.

I have a 4:3 Sony Wega, though it does have a wide screen enhanced mode.
And yes, anamorphic DVDs due look much better on it.
However, I'm a movie fan, not a videophile, so unless a transfer is absolutely awful, I generally don't give a shit. And this one is a pretty damn nice transfer for a non-anamorphic disc.

If y'all don't care, that's good for you, but I have refused and will continue to refuse to get "The Nightmare Before Christmas" or any other non-anamorphic movie until it receives the anamorphic enhancement it deserves. The only non-anamorphic movies I own are "The Apostle" (I didn't know any better at the time) and "Battlestar Galactica" (I thought sure if they were re-releasing it, they'd at least make it anamorphic this time.) Uggggh!

Different strokes for different folks.
I watch movies to enjoy the film, not to admire the picture quality, so I'm not going to pass on one of my favorites just because it's not anamorphic.

VHS is rarely in OAR, and you have to rewind.
But seriously, I do care somewhat about picture quality, I'd pass on a title I loved if the non-anamorphic transfer was really bad. But Nightmare is a damn good one. Maybe the best looking non-anamorphic disc I've seen.
I'm just not a videophile that can't enjoy a movie if the picture quality is less than perfect.

Does there need to be anything else?

I really hope for a re-release as well. There's really no good way to watch a non-anamorphic 1.66:1 movie on a widescreen TV. Either you use Zoom mode and crop some image off the top and bottom, or you use Standard mode and deal with bars on all 4 sides.
I do agree that the picture quality of the current disc is suprisingly decent for a non-anamoprhic DVD, especially considering how they crammed so many supplements plus a DTS track onto the same disc as the movie. I guess for whatever reason it must have been an easy picture to compress.

Hold off on getting a non-anamorphic release unless an anamorphic release is in the making is silly, IMHO. I'd rather enjoy it now and upgrade later than just piss and moan about it.

peep (and others). I felt the same way until I got my 106" widescreen.(Front projection) Let me tell you, those non-anamorphic films look SIGNFICANTLY worse, smaller, larger black bars (on ALL 4 sides).... yes, I can blow the image up to fill the screen but trust me - you lose a LOT of PQ doing that - and these non-anamorphic DVDs really show their faults on a large screen.
When I had a 32" square TV I couldn't tell the difference and wondered what all the hooping and hollering was about. Now you couldn't pay me to buy a non-anamorphic DVD again..
Just my 2 cents..
