I was looking at the box we have at Best Buy last night, and King Kong definitely comes in a tin and it definitely includes the other two movies. It also states something on the back about a Best Buy exclusive that includes more goodies than other box sets. Or something to that effect. I was baffled when I first started reading this thread today and it mentioned separate tin and box set releases, cuz all we have in our warehouse are the separate individual releases and the box set with the tin and "goodies". I'll look again tonight to see what exactly the "goodies" listed are. I do remember the offer for a poster reprint with $3.25 shipping though.

Cornelius - can you clear this up? I read over at HTF that this comes with all three items facing out - you see the covers instead of the spines. So is it one long box? With the three items all one next to the other?

Cornelius1047 11-18-05 05:44 PM

No. The only one I can actually see with the packaging is King Kong in a tin.

As for Mr. Harris, he did say that over at HTF.

Ray Harryhausen said what I wrote earlier, that the filming of that sequence in full technicolor was considered but never carried out due to cost. It was released with that sequence tinted in red instead.

As to the use of sepia tone, Mr Harris has said that some prints (the active word here being "some", but not all) of "Mighty Joe Young" were in sepia as well as having the tinted final sequence.

Yes, Mr. Harris meant MJY, not SoK in reference to sepia.

Yeah, I wish I had a camera phone. Or a cell phone at all. Soon enough. I could always borrow one of the digital cameras and... well, I can't really do that while the store is closed. And I'd have no way to get it on here, really. Just a couple more days and you can see for yourselves. It's kinda like the anime titles with the toys housed in front, clear plastic protecting it. Like I said, King Kong is the only one visible.

Anyway, here's some more info off the back:
"Includes King Kong Tin Collector's Box, Reprints of King Kong Souvenir Program and 10 Movie One-Sheet Postcards"

*ahem*

"Best Buy Bonus! 5 Addditional Movie One-Sheet Postcards Not Available Anywhere Else plus Awesome Memorabilia Not Found In Other 3-Movie King Kong Collection Sets."

From the looks of the back cover, King Kong comes in a digipak inside the tin with the collection. The individual release is in an amaray case with a slipcover.

Oh, yeah, and in case it hasn't been mentioned, regular price is $37.99 but it's on sale next week for $33.99. So there you go.

I picked up a copy of the box set last night at Best Buy. I went looking for the $7.99 Harry Potter discs, but when I saw the Kong set, I basically said, "screw Harry Potter" and grabbed Kong instead. Inside the box are the King Kong tin plus Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young in normal DVD cases. Inside the tin are the King Kong Collector's Edition (in a digipak case), an advert for a free reproduction movie poster, a replica of the Grauman's Chinese Theatre program, and 5 movie one-sheet postcards. Outside the tin there are five more postcards (I think this is the BB exclusive). I watched the original Kong this morning, and it looks fantastic for a 1933 film.

Bleddyn Williams 11-19-05 12:26 PM

Ralph, did you get the sale price, or did you pay $37.99?

Cornelius1047 11-19-05 12:40 PM

It won't ring up as $33.99 till Tuesday. It's in the system now as $37.99, so chances are that's what he paid for it, plus tax.

Ah, so the Best Buy Exclusive is just 5 more postcards.

Thanks for the info, Ralph!

veritas878 11-19-05 02:03 PM

does the 1976 version come in the coleection as well as the 1933? Or will that have to be purchased seperately?

Ralph Jenkins 11-19-05 02:05 PM

Yeah, I didn't get the sale price (didn't know about it at the time), but BB did send out some 10% off coupons that are good through Monday.

That version is from an entirely different company, Paramount. The 1933 version (and related DVDs) is from Warner. So they are sold separately. It would be sacrilege to pack them together anyway.

I was wondering about that to. Maybe its a Best Buy exclusive deal. It looks different from what I have seen pictured before for the box set.

Seashellz 11-20-05 12:46 PM

is this the set that is selling between $25-28 everywhere else?

No. The BB exclusive set includes the tin and the extra goodies as well as Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young. Your only choices outside of Best Buy's set are to get the tin with the extras by itself (without the other two movies) OR the standard three-movie set (without the tin and extras).

ohhh...so the other stores 3-discer, do not include the tin? just the 2-discer of the first in a slipcase...
now i get it.
so is it worth the extra dollar to get the other 2 movies and the 1st without the tin? i just don't know about the inferior sequels...

seymouru 11-20-05 02:12 PM

They may be inferior to the original, but that's comparing them to a masterpiece. MJY is extremely enjoyable, and SOK is a fun watch too. If you like giant gorilla movies, they don't get better than these three. :)

fmian 11-20-05 02:40 PM

I'll only buy it if they include the Simpsons episode too.
