I will be buying the tin. Perhaps later I will buy Mighty Joe Young and Son of Kong, providing they are released separately.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

This is the best news ever....Welcome to the forum you glorious bastard...you have made a friend in Cameron.. this is the best news ever for dvd. My most anticipated release.

Grizzly 08-05-05 08:00 PM

here's a small glimpse at the tin (the 2-disc cover is the same, as can be seen in even smaller format at DavisDVD):

http://a330.g.akamai.net/7/330/2540/...d_kingkong.jpg

also, Variety reports that King Kong will have an audio commentary, but made up from archival interview material featuring people who worked on the film. the Ray Harryhausen et al. commentary is for the Mighty Joe Young disc. here's the scoop:

Warner Home Video will unleash the original RKO "King Kong" in a two-disc special edition Nov. 22.

The restored movie features long-missing frames from when Fay Wray falls from the Empire State Building.

Bonus features include a seven-part documentary including a look at "King Kong" remake director Peter Jackson, a new one-hour TCM doc on '33 "Kong" helmer Merian C. Cooper and audio commentary with archival recordings of cast and crew.

A few bonus features relate to an earlier, never-completed movie, "Creation," dinosaur footage from which was incorporated into "King Kong."

A collector's edition packaged in a tin will include the two-disc special edition and two more first-time DVD releases: the sequel released later in 1933, "The Son of Kong," as well as 1949's "Mighty Joe Young." Latter is accompanied by two featurettes on f/x artist Ray Harryhausen and commentary by Harryhausen, Ken Ralston and Terry Moore.

Warner also will be releasing separately Cooper's 1935 release "The Last of Pompeii."

Damned if all the best DVD news didn't just drop. This is so much better than I ever dreamed of. Wow.

Looks like I'll be getting the 4 disc set - I love Mighty Joe Young, and Son of Kong is pretty good (they had some great ideas, but the movie was - unfortunately - rushed).

The 4 disc set really sounds good!

Isn't this the Australian R4 Limited Edition Tin?

I'm confused by this listing at amazon.com. It's for a 4-disc set of King Kong, but it has a release date of November 15th, and it lists the studio as Sony Music (Video). It also lists the format as "COLOR". Is this somehow related to Peter Jackson's remake?

It's never before been available on DVD...in Region 1. But it has been available in other regions. For example, this German version was released in 1999...

Region 4 as well.

timmy o'toole 08-06-05 07:31 AM

At one point I was going to purchase a r2 release of Kong. I'm glad I have waited.

i'm sure they look the same. that image above is from Variety's online article about the upcoming R1 release, so i would think it's the real deal for R1.

milo bloom 08-06-05 11:19 AM

What is Mighty Joe Young's relationship to Kong? Other than thematically?

And I have to have the tin, so I'll wait for separate releases of the others.

mzupeman2 08-06-05 11:23 AM

King Kong is one of those classics in my opinion, that you just need to get the best edition available of. I'll definitely be getting the tin.

Thanks

It would nice to see that R4 Tin edition stateside ... but, I suppose what's packaging when you have finally have the meat you've been waiting for.

Grizzly 08-06-05 02:12 PM

it seems to me that there will only be 2 releases. the regular 2-disc of King Kong (the "Special Edition"), and the Collector's Edition tin which features the 2-disc King Kong plus Son of Kong, Mighty Joe Young and the postcards, etc. if you read the Variety article closely (i didn't, apparently), it says the tin includes the two other films and the non-DVD goodies. other sites, like DavisDVD suggest it's 3 different releases, but it seems like there are only two.. right? here's the Variety blurb, again:

"A collector's edition packaged in a tin will include the two-disc special edition and two more first-time DVD releases: the sequel released later in 1933, "The Son of Kong," as well as 1949's "Mighty Joe Young."

the tin, if it'll only be $39.95 will be such a priceworthy purchase.. you get the 2-disc King Kong, two additional movies in a tin and with the non-DVD goodies. how could you pass that up?

RoboDad 08-06-05 02:57 PM

I really hope you're right!

Paul Drake 08-06-05 02:58 PM

It doesn't sound like Warner to make people buy KK twice to get the 2 other movies plus the goodies, but that's what they're doing. Hope this isn't a new trend in WB marketing.

Hopefully e-tailers get the MSRP correct when this goes up for pre-order. Wizard of Oz is still showing at $49.95 on line while the official WB annoucement cited $39.95. I'm holding off pre-ordering until this gets resolved.

JayHM 08-06-05 03:25 PM

There are three releases. Someone at HTF posted some info and a picture of the 4-disc set (not a tin).

Grizzly 08-06-05 04:33 PM

damn.

Warner needs to put out a proper press release for this. it seems every other article about it is inaccurate in one way or another.

Grizzly 08-06-05 04:42 PM

moviesunlimited.com, from which the artwork for the 4-disc release posted on HTF came from, also list The Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young as individual releases available for $19.95 SRP. here's the artwork from their site (all of them are listed for Nov. 22nd):

2-disc ($26.95):

Tin ($39.95):
http://www.moviesunlimited.com/boxco...ide/D74967.jpg

Collection ($39.95):

Son ($19.95):
http://www.moviesunlimited.com/boxco...ide/D74969.jpg

Mighty ($19.95):
http://www.moviesunlimited.com/boxco...ide/D74970.jpg

too bad there's no "ultimate" edition with the Tin + Son + Mighty for a better price than buying them individually.

oh, and they had the artwork for Cooper's The Last Days of Pompeii as well, also due out on November 11th.
