UMDs getting Exclusive Extras (OLDBOY)
 

This was rather vague in a press release I got today, but it seems like things will start getting annoying as UMDs get exclusive bonus features not on DVD...

Apparentally they both have deleted scenes, and the UMD version has a few minutes extra, but none of the other features on the DVD.

Yeah, day-and-date release with the DVD, both with an SRP of $24.99. The UMD will have five deleted scenes the DVD doesn't have.

BCI is also releasing the first UMD only title, one of their Pride Fighting Championship compilations.

Other UMD news: Bandai will release five UMDs in October, Akira from Geneon, and Lions Gate will start squeezing extras on their Sept. wave of UMDs (Young Guns, Total Recall, House of a 1,000 Corpses). (Source: VSDA, DVD Release Report)

This could get annoying really fast. Hopefully the UMD extras are nothing of significance.

What's the logic behind this? Get people to buy both? That's pretty doubtful...

Yeah, especially when the price of a UMD is $10-$15 higher than the DVD!

UMD would be more viable if the PSP had AV ports to plug it into a TV ... as it stands now, it's a fad. Maybe second gen. will correct it, make it more appealing to more people.

If production costs go down, the SRP will go down, but right now, any company charging more/the same for a UMD as a DVD is, well, nuts. They're hoping the initial sales that Sony saw for some of its titles holds up for future releases, but one has to assume that a majority of PSP users also own DVD players. And the portability thing carries little weight when you're talking about people who own portable DVD players or (like me) a laptop with a DVD-ROM.

So will these special features appear on a (possible) SE of Oldboy?

As far as I know there's only one version of the DVD by Tartan. However, I know that Tartan does sometime provide two versions of a movie like Tale of Two Sisters. This came out in one Disc and a Two Disc version. However, I believe this was just an exception as they normally just release one disc version of a movie.

They already do... on the R3 Ultimate Edition. :)

The problem with this idea is that while the UMDs look good on the PSP's screen, they would probably look terrible if they were blown up to fit a TV screen.

i actually really like getting umd (mainly on ebay) but its crazy how many movies are on UMD now, i go to best buy and there are tons now, more then games

Absolutely true. UMD video has approximately the resolution of VHS.

Videophiles around the world will cringe in horror. But it would still be watchable, I think. Better than trying to enjoy T2 on that tiny, tiny, itsy-bitsy little screen; it's sharp, but no good for epic flicks.

I'm only for the TV thing because it allows more than one person to enjoy a UMD movie. Yeah, yeah, PSP is "on-the-go entertainment," but I think some form of TV playback would boost its exposure and appeal. Maybe something on the video game side prevents that?

Something funny: An upcoming UMD and DVD release of the original Gone in 60 Seconds shows the shortcomings of the format: the DVD promises "More than 500 crashes!" but apparently 1.8 GBs only gets us "More than 300 crashes!" on the UMD. What next? Three-fifths of Lord of the Rings?

I believe Lost: Season 1, well the 2 hour pilot(first 2 ep.) has some exclusives as well.

I still cannot believe how popular UMD's are still. But hey, if they are selling, I don't blame the studios for keep producing them. I own one UMD...SAW, that I bought for $4. That's about all I'd pay for a UMD

Maybe 8-year-olds in the backseat of their parents' SUVs are really into Asian shock cinema?

Because consumers are lemmings. Portable DVD players have dropped in size to dimensions only slightly larger than the disc itself and are selling for $100... and of course play standard DVDs.

I've got to agree here 100%! UMD is annoying.

That's what confuses me. I don't care about portability one way or the other -- if I want to watch a movie on the road, I always have a laptop with me.

But I don't understand why people would pay additional (quite a bit additional, relatively) for a movie on a format that can only be watched on a PSP. Why not just get a cheap portable player and enjoy your entire existing collection that can also be played on a TV, PC, etc. I would have thought that UMD was a product without and audience, but I'm apparently very wrong.
