1943 BATMAN serial 10.18.05
taken from Steve Phillips at the HTF
DVD Drive-In is reporting that the first 1943 BATMAN serial hits DVD on Oct 18th. Good news, but is there any chance it will be the original, unaltered version? I kind of doubt it; this will most likely be the same version (altered) released by Goodtimes in 1989. I've got a copy of the original version, and most of what was changed was the narration at the beginning and end of the chapters, which would be considered racist today. The Goodtimes version has rewritten and revoiced narration by Gary Owens from "Laugh-In"! End of quote |
I was wondering if we would ever see any other Batman serials released on DVD given all the comments on the racism they contain. It'll be interesting to see if it's the unedited originals or not.
|
I thought the 1949 Serial was pretty good, so I will probably give this one a chance too.
|
Great news... I thought the other serial was pretty fun. Haven't even seen this one, but I'll be giving it a blind buy.
|
I was hoping this would be released sometime.
The only way I see getting the original is if it's released by some small company who figures not enough people will even know it's released to care about any backlash. The people that would care are too busy attacking popular video games to go after something like this. |
So by the end of the October, we'll have the 1943 and 1949 serials, the Adam West movie, the two Michael Keaton movies, the Val Kilmer, George Clooney and Christian Bale movies, not to mention a handful of animated interpretations... so why can't they figure out how to release the damn 1966 TV show already?!?

October 18, 2005 = Batman's National Day
|
How did they alter the DVDs? Shorter?
|
Hopefully one or both of the Superman serials will come out with the Superman movie next year.

1943 Batman Serial Batman - Two-Disc Special Edition Batman Returns - Two-Disc Special Edition Batman Forever - Two-Disc Special Edition Batman & Robin - Two-Disc Special Edition Batman Anthology Set Batman Begins The Batman vs Dracula Plus The Batman - Season 1, Vol. 2 comes out on 9/20 and all of the animated movies are being released in keepcases in Oct. Now, if only the studios would come to their senses and release the 1960's TV show. |
On the 2-disc set of Scooby Doo Movies, did they release the 2 episodes guest starring Batman & Robin?
|
As stated above, the opening and closing narration was redone to remove slurs against Japanese, and I think a bit of similar dialog was redubbed to do the same.

Awesome news -- looking forward to this!

bah! More censorship!
By the way Batman vs Predator is pretty awesome despite being only 8 minutes. |

Man, that's a lotta Batman in October. Never seen the 1943 serial, but it sounds interesting.

 That cover looks cool and all... but I can't help but feel there are going to be tons of disappointed blind-buys. Imagine picking up that cover, taking it home to watch for the first time, and being faced with this:

I thought it was neat when it used to run on A&E...but that was when I was about 12...I might pick it up after a price drop.

Any word yet on whether this will be the unedited version or the censored version? None of the press releases seem to address this issue.
