I just watched the unrated version last night. It ended up being a little screwy plotwise, but overall I LOVED it. Some really fun and brutal gore scenes.

Well, I took a chance & ordered it thru Netflix since Tarantino commented that he got the unrated version from them.

It came in today & sure enough, it is the unrated disc. The weird thing is even the disc sleeve says that it is Rated R. Are the grunts no longer paying attention there?

I just watched the version sent to me by Netflix and it is indeed the unrated version. The title screen of the disc itself says "Unrated High Tension".

Even if this is a new cut, it's still rather obvious what he was doing. I was like, "Holy Crap, that's pretty gross!". But, it remains one of the more memorable scenes in the movie.

In addition, I'm glad they
Spoiler:
had the whole muliple personality thing. I usually hate these kinds of movies (can anyone say Identity?). But it worked in this case. Without it, the movie would have just been filled with super stupid people.

During the movie, I kept questioning things like:

Why would a person open the door to some man who parked his big-assed truck 2 ft away from (and facing) your front door?

Who attacks an entire family armed with only a straight razor as your primary weapon? (I know a shotgun came into use later, but it seemed like an afterthought).

If you escaped the killer, why would you keep leaving the "perfect hiding places" that you keep finding?

So, I guess that the multiple personality thing worked for me since I thought I was just watching some slasher movie with an ill-conceived bad guy and a bunch of stupid-assed victims. That all changed with the ending.

I thought the characters (including the main character) acted pretty stupid during the entire movie also. The twist seemed a little interesting at first, but totally fell apart into absurdity. Movies like this need to make their own interior sense
Spoiler:
(like The Machinist). If the whole movie (execpt for the fact that the same number of people were murdered) was a lie, then the whole thing is pointless. The cool thing about The Machinist and Fight Club and even Sixth Sense was rewatching them once you knew the truth. This movie has none of that. Also, this movie lacked a convincing reason for the main character to disassociate from reality.
I guess it was better than average for a French horror movie :) but, aside from the convincing special effects, it was pretty lame.
Spoiler:
I almost thought that everything that happened after she started masterbating might have turn3ed out to be a dream that ended when she "saved" her friend, who she obviously had a crush on. Maybe that would have made a better movie - with a less interesting but more believable twist.

I watched the Unrated verion last night.

I was pleased with it. I'm a huge horror and gore fan so I'd rate this above average. I think my GF thought I was disturbed when I cheered at the gory scenes

Spoiler:
I don't think she had multiple personalties really, the whole thing was just her story of what happened. When she was sitting there in the hospital at the beginning they were taping her, and she said "is it recording?" and then the movie is her version of the events that took place. She just made up the big bad killer guy and all of the events involving him. But then her story started to fall apart at then end and thats why she kept switching back and forth between herself and the guy

dadaluholla- I 100 percent agree with you. In fact, it's even stated as that by the director on the DVD. However, I think the misunderstanding is because the director really didn't make it clear enough in the film. I don't need it spelled out, but it is easy to see why the majority of movie-goers think that
Spoiler:
it is multiple personality disorder
unless you really inspect the film closely.

Since this thread is starting to discuss the movie itself, you might want to check out this thread in Movie Talk: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/showthread.php?t=426565

If that's the point of the movie, then the filmmakers really f*cked up and my opinion of it is now a whole lot lower!

Just watched it & posted my comments about the movie there. Thanks for the link.

So let me get this straight, the Unrated cut of the film on DVD is in its original French, but the subtitles are from the dubbed English edition of the film, and not taken from the original French?? If I am following correctly that is....that sucks if true. Does it really take that much away from the film?

I got the 2 disc Dreamix version off Ebay like 6 months ago, in which was unrated, in French, with English subtitles which is great, I still got to see the film, but the whole 2nd disc is in French with no subtitles, so I am missing out on all the extras. I was going to duble dip too for the extras since I loved the film, but I am on the fence now. While the version I have is great, and sounds good I want the damn extras. Stupid LG!
