Carlito's Way Sequel goes direct to dvd 09.27.05

From Davis dvd

Carlito's Way: Rise to Power

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will release the straight-to-video sequel Carlito's Way: Rise to Power on September 27th. Seduced by the power of the brutal New York underworld, young Carlito Brigante (Jay Hernandez - Friday Night Light) enters a deadly circle of greed and retribution. Assisted by his two "brothers" in crime, Carlito is on the fast track to becoming Spanish Harlem's ultimate kingpin. But he quickly learns that the only way to survive at the top is through loyalty to his friends and respect for the rules of the street. The film is directed by Michael Bregman, producer of the original film. Look for the disc to come with a 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 track. Extras are TBA. Retail is $26.98. Visit the official website here (a trailer coming soon).

So I guess whoever stated in the movie forum thread that this film looked more like a TV movie was half right.

So... a sequel in name only, as the only tenuous connection appears to be the original's producer now wearing the director's hat. wha-huh?

Not to split hairs, but...

Isn't this one actually supposed to be a prequel, and not a sequel?

ditto on the comments above, this seems to be a prequel, or just "another movie based on the same source book" rather than being connected to the Al Pacino move at all.

It is most definately a prequel.Hence one of the tag lines from the trailer "see how it all began" or something like that.

Saw a trailer for this in front of War of the Worlds (it actually played with the commercials before the real trailers). It looks like it ought to go direct to the trash heap, IMO.

Technically, however, it is a prequel using the same characters from the Pacino film, and is based on an earlier novel in the series from the same author. I believe Luis Guzman is the only returning cast member. This one is set something like 10 years before the events of the original Carlito's Way, but Guzman looks about 20 years older.

P. Diddy also has a starring role as a "gangsta". That should tell you all you need to know.

I think P. Diddy does a good job of picking roles. I enjoyed him in Made and Monster's Ball.

Please, dont call him P. Diddy. He's now known as Diddy.

You dont want him to shoot you (literally), do you ?

Nope. The film was shot 1.85:1. I also will be shocked if it gets a six channel mix. I worked on this film, so if anyone has any questions... shoot.

I kept seeing the trailer at the theater with the pre-show commercials, and tv segmants, before the lights would turn off and the usual trailers started. I figured it was going straight to video.

I can honestly say I didn't have high hopes for this project since I first heard about it months ago. You can just tell most of the time if something is going to work or not, and it seems like the studio recognized that this probably wouldn't do so well theatrically as well.

What is that supposed to mean? I worked as the cutting room intern. I've seen pretty much all of the dailies and all of the different assemblies (too many times.)
