Anchor Bay Double Dracula, Why so expensive?

I thought I'd pick up a copy of Dracula, Prince of Darkness/Satanic Rites of Dracula but wha? How did a DVD which came out in 2003 get to be so rare that it commands a price of $100 and up?

hmm?

darkside 07-23-05 02:35 AM

Wait are you serious? I just saw a copy of that somewhere. I belive it is out of print and I have both the single release versions. Not much there worth big money. The prints or okay at best and not anamorphic. Dracula Prince of Darkness is a pretty awful movie to be honest and I'm a fan of Hammer Horror.

I just checked eBay and there is a sealed copy going for $8.50. Where in the world did you see it offered for that price? I find that truly amazing.

Two people have it listed on Half.com around $100 and looking at past sales it seems like these DVDs are selling at fairly high prices. Not worth it though.

Yeah, this DVD is out of print and going for a nice price, though you can still find copies at some Borders. The QUATERMASS 2-DVD set is also OOP now.

Wow! I might agree if you were talking about Satanic Rites... However, I have never heard a Hammer fan make this claim. Once again, WOW! -ohbfrank-

You do realize the reason Christopher Lee was silent in the movie was because he refused to read the horrible dialog written for him. There are at least 30 other Hammer films I would put above this one (most directed by Fisher) on my list of favorite Hammer and oddly enough Satanic Rites doesn't bug me as much as this one though I won't try to argue its better or anything.

Anyway, I usually loved the Hammer films directed by Terence Fisher, but for some reason this one just bores me. To each his own though.

It only costs $8.50!

Which one might that be? Do you mean this one?:

It WAS $8.50 until I bid on it and I still didn't bid enough to outbid the current high bidder!

We'll just see where this auction ends in a few days....

Well I went back to the used CD and DVD store where I had run across this DVD on Friday, but of course it was already sold. The had had a few of the other Hammer Double Feature discs as well, but someone had snagged them all.

JOE29 07-23-05 08:11 PM

I didn't like Satanis Rites either, I had bought it before and ended up trading it back in, Dracula Prince of Darkness was ok, I had it on VHS before but wasn't good enough for me to get on DVD. Actually I'd pass on both these movies now, and i'm a big fan of the Hammer series too.

Cameron 07-23-05 11:54 PM

i nearly bought this at a borders a few months back, but when i came back it was gone. anyone have the upc on it

scarredgod 07-24-05 12:10 AM

i have this still sealed and i dont really want it, i wonder if i should ebay it. ill wait and see how that current auction ends.

Cameron 07-24-05 12:24 AM

If you have a Borders Books in your area go to http://www.bordersstores.com/index.jsp and see if they have it in stock. You may also want to check local Barnes and Nobles. I did a quick check for copies in San Antonio and Austin and three stores showed it in stock for $20. This is probably a better way to get it than ebay if by chance you can get it locally.

I checked mine and 2/3 show it in stock (but I know how that can be misleading).

eBay buyers never cease to amaze me.

thanks...that was my plan as well darkside

Gojira69 07-25-05 10:31 PM

Thanks for the feedback, all. I sauntered into Borders today and found the thing on the shelf, I pluncked down my $20 and sauntered back out.

I had not thought to look prior to your posts because I had the (false) impression I would not be able to find it becasue its "rare" ;) .

The Anchor Bay releases are here:

I don't understand the fervid activity over this release. Didn't I read somewhere that the Hammer Collection was going to be released entirely (or re-released as the case is)?

Such a collection would be impossible, realistically speaking, as the US video rights are all over the map. Some are held by Warner, some by MGM, some by Universal, etc. In the case of the Anchor Bay titles, all of those original Hammer releases (including the ones discussed here) have had their rights expire at Anchor Bay and revert back to Bill Lustig's Blue Underground label. Lustig has said that he has no plans to ever release those titles to DVD again.
