Pippi Longstocking

You can keep the new live-action and animated remakes, I've always wanted the original red-headed delinquent I remembered from childhood. Hen's Tooth Video is pleased to announce the release of the four original Swedish "Pippi Longstocking" feature films starring Inger Nilsson. Long out of print and eagerly awaited by fans, Pippi Longstocking, Pippi Goes on Board, Pippi In the South Seas and Pippi on the Run will be available on October 4th with stunning new digital transfers from the original negatives and the original English theatrical dubs. Extras will include photo galleries and filmographies. The discs will be available individually at $19.95, or boxed in the Pippi Longstocking Collection for $59.95.

Good news about the original English dubs. I had heard that a past release had new dubs. I love the old original cheesy ones.

Wow! That's going back. I remember the matinees. I don't think I've seen one of these since the early 70's.

I was just going to say...is this some sort of a sick joke or what? This is such a great looking set...I would get it in a heart beat, and on top of that the Swedish discs lack English subs too. Otherwise I would have snapped them last year!!

Whay does it have to be a dubbed-only set of films??????

My wife is from Sweden, and was really excited when I told her these were coming out over here. I guess I'll have to let her down now that I have to tell her there's no original Swedish audio.

To me, the original cheesy English dubs are what gave the films their "charm". Annika sounds like a whiney middle aged woman

A bit off-topic, but you should consider getting an inexpensive region-free player and importing discs from Sweden. Seems like an ideal situation.

I am region-free, but as mentioned earlier, the Swedish discs don't have English subs, and therefore I wouldn't be able to enjoy them.

I have a Swedish wife as well. Unfortunately, my Swedish is pretty crappy, so it's unfortunate that the subtitles for the R2 DVDs are only in Scandinavian languages. I still might pick some of the Pippi Långstrump movies next time in Sweden.

By the way, not many Swedish DVD sites ship outside of Sweden.

I only saw the first film in the early 70's - looking forward to seeing the other films for the first time.

Vhs copies of these movies used to approach $50 for a nice clamshell copy (1 movie) in the last 5+ years. No more demand like that I am sure, but for many this will be very nice.

Here's the scoop:

Hen's Tooth had asked the licensor for Swedish language tracks, but were told that they are not available contractually for use in Region 1.

I know some of you really want the Swedish tracks, but that's not the distributor's fault. You can always buy the import set and get a region-free player. That's what I do when my wife wants her original German language programs from childhood (like Biene Maja).

I don't think so from what I've read. It's the TV series release that features new British sounding dubbing, but the movie versions are said to be using the old American dubs from the 1970's. That's a good thing.
