Aeon Flux - possibly 10/4/05

TVShowsOnDVD is reporting that a teaser trailer on a Laguna Beach DVD is showing details about MTV's release of its Liquid Television series Aeon Flux to tie into the live-action film with Charlize Theron coming out in the fall.

Digitally restored picture and 5.1 sound are some of the features.

CertifiedTHX 07-02-05 05:27 PM

Good time to be alive. :)

I hope this release contains all the episodes, and not just a "best of" compilation. Caught marathons of Aeon Flux when MTV aired them in the late night back in 1998, and I was hooked. Been waiting for a "complete series" set. This sounds promising.

Now if only they'd release The Maxx on dvd.

YourOlympicHero 07-02-05 09:52 PM

and The Head

Bobbin 07-02-05 10:53 PM

and The State.

Assuming this is a "complete" collection of sorts and not just a greatest hits, I wonder if it will also include the Liquid TV shorts in addition to the series proper.

RATRUNICK 07-03-05 10:25 AM

Yes yes yes....

Been waiting for this for a long time. I also hope it's the full series.

How many episodes would that be? How many hours of material are we talking about?

16 episodes. I'd estimate about 20 minutes per episode making it 320 minutes. Possibly more if they include the Liquid TV shorts. To give context to that runtime, the long OOP Aeon Flux disc was only 120 minutes.

I'm sure there's lots they could do for extras but I predict AT MOST an interview and some promo crap for the Aeon Flux movie.

From TVShowsOnDVD.com:

MTV is set to release Aeon Flux later this year; a bit of a no-brainer since the movie with Charlize Theron is planned for the fall. A trailer for the release appears on the Laguna Beach DVD, giving us the first pieces of information on this anticipated release. The release will include digitally restored picture and sound (in Dolby Digital 5.1!), and some great extras including commentary tracks, interviews with Peter Chung, production crew, and the cast, and a "History of Aeon Flux" featurette. We've heard rumors there will be way more material, but that's all that was mentioned in the trailer. They're aiming to have the set out just before the movie, and the tentative date we've heard is October 4, though this could change.

I can't see Thereon as Aeon Flux.

I am racking my brains and the best I can come up with is Paris Hilton with a dye-job. Really, I think she would be perfect. Skanky-skinny and since Aeon rarely, if ever, speaks, the required acting would be right down there with her level of talent.

Very good news indeed! And surprising-- to me at least. Thanks for the info! :)

Most welcome! :) I don't know if the abundance of special features surprises me per se, but I'm grateful they're going the extra mile. Been years since I've seen Aeon Flux, but I remember the adventures being incredible.

I remember other animated movies airing on MTV long ago, too. They made quite an impression because the stories were so engaging, and executed with such violence. I wish I could remember the titles, but I can recall little more than fleeting images. They had the look and feel of the Animatrix shorts and the anime Quentin Tarantino used to tell the backstory of O-Ren Ishii in Kill Bill: Vol. 1. If anyone knows anything about these "nameless" movies from MTV, I would love to hear more about them.

What I remember liking most about Aeon Flux was the strangeness. The ultra violent direction that the show often went only added to it odd atmosphere.

The only other MTV cartoons that made any lasting impression on me were The Maxx (based on the awesome comic by Sam Keith) and The Head (an original work as far as I know, and at least as unique as Aeon Flux but without all the violence).

Not surprizing the Animatrix should remind you of Aeon Flux. The final installment of the Animatrix was done by Peter Chung the writer/artist for Aeon Flux. If you remember that short it was the most surreal animatrix of the bunch, the one most either loved or hated, just like Aeon Flux.

I can't wait. I have a Wet Shorts "best of" compilation of Liquid Television that has a bunch of Aeon Flux material.

No I don't like Paris Hilton AF, please take that back and appologize. I'd take any no name actress with a physical presence over some spoiled kid who stumbled upon celebrity through self degredation.

I don't think the actress who plays Aeon needs to be skinny, but she should be physical. The artistry of Chung was such that everyone had long spindly appenditures, it's just how he draws, it doesn't have to be conveyed in motion pictures.

How is that confusing? Did it contradict TVShowsOnDVD.com? I didn't notice any differences.

So, I'm correct in thinking that this new release will contain everything on my unopened OOP disc? Maybe I should think about selling/trading it.

That is a beautiful, bautiful cover oh my God it is beautiful oh yes indeed!

It's lovely. I assume the corner thing is just a sticker.

I can't choose which cover is better... the Mike Judge B&B set or this one. Superb work by Paramount in both cases!

CertifiedTHX 09-04-05 05:30 AM

Wow. This really is the Aeon Flux collection I've been waiting for. Mad props to those who put this set together. Perfect cover art, too. Whole thing is beautifully done.

Hearing of this exhilarates and terrifies me at the same time. October and November are presenting so many releases this year that it's potentially the biggest DVD buying period I've yet encountered since getting into the format. Nearly every Tuesday in those months will bring me back to Best Buy for something new. That's so awesome--and rather dreadful when I contemplate the degree of spending that will be required of me.

Still, I'm excited about this. :)

Wow! That is a fucking gorgeous cover! I wasn't gonna pick this up right away, but after seeing that cover, I just have to get it as soon as it comes out!

Big Worms 09-04-05 09:46 AM

I never saw this show, but I am curios to see it since I saw the trailer for the movie.
The cover art is sweet!
