Scrubs Season 1 "edited"? Why? and other rants

I was watching the third episode and when Dr. Cox was talking to Bambi wanting to be left alone instead of saying, "I swear to allah" He said "I swear to Aisha". Since when did saying swear to allah become so bad?

Has anyone noticed any other instances that didn't involve music?

My first episode on the first disc had horizontal lines in it towards the end of the episode for about 10 seconds. Did anyone else have that issue?

I did a search and didn't see anything about these things so if there are then I'm sorry in advance.

Skoobooz 06-28-05 08:17 PM

Do you have any prior evidence of him having said "Allah"? And no, I haven't noticed any instances of "censorship."

vaporware 06-28-05 08:22 PM

Forunately for me I'm partially deaf and I happen to read lips. Plus it's obvious it's been dubbed over.

Heartagram 06-28-05 08:40 PM

yup i noticed the dubbing as well, but i never saw the original episode on tv so i dont know if he said allah when it was originally aired.

FinkPish 06-28-05 09:00 PM

I remember seeing that episode originally on TV, and it was dubbed then too. Not censorship... on the DVDs at least; possibly studio concern or self-censorship instead.

GAH!!! I wish the word Censorship would be changed on the forum so everytime someone types it in a post it gets automaticlly changed to "altered". There's a difference.

Jack, we stand together on this one.

I'd settle for "edited" as well.

It's not censorship, and I hope to aisha for the last time, censorship REQUIRES government action. Period. End of discussion.

I was only going with the trend in thread topics. -ptth-

What about the music. Has it been cofirmed yet if the music is original or not?

I believe there is only one track that was not in the original aired versions, and they actually explain why in the commentary for that episode: apparently the band wanted way more money than anyone wanted to pay for, so they decided to replace it with another song. Personally, it isn't obvious or distracting at all, so if you are holding out for this reason, go ahead and get it.

I highly recommend picking up this set. I've only got the last two episodes and some of the extras to go and I've laughed out loud numerous times so far. I'm looking forward to season 2. I hope they announce it soon.

If that's the case, then you should be used to seeing stuff like that all the time, considering that probably 90% of the audio in TV and Movies is dubbed in later, both to compensate for ambient sound and to make edits (not censoring) like the one you're pointing out...

But most of the time, it's not obvious...

Groucho 06-29-05 08:27 AM

Why are you so eager to hear references to Allah, hmm Osama?

But seriously people, praise Aisha.

lotsofdvds 06-29-05 08:50 AM

Season one started in 2001. The ep was probably filmed before 9/11 and obviously aired afterwards. Throwing out a reference to Allah in a sitcom right after 9/11 wouldn't elicit many laughs and would probably make some audience members tune out. At that time it would have been a bigger comedy killer than the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.

I seriously doubt the line ever aired as originally recorded. No big whoop.

Does anyone know which band and which song by said band?

After watching Gigli, Vin Diesel was so enraged that he threatened to take away the music of Raffi from the people of Earth. After listening to Baby Beluga again, he reconsidered.

I think I remember it being Alright by Five For Fighting, but I could be wrong. I'm not sure what they replaced it with or which episode it was, but as previously stated, they do talk about it in one of the commentaries.

Superman07 06-29-05 11:19 AM

if it was dubbed during the oringal airing, where is anything other than aisha coming from?

I don't understand your question.

I would disagree. I think there are a lot of times where things are dubbed and you can tell.

Also, there are a lot of places in teh Scrubs set where, after watching a show, then watching the special features, where the directors liked the words in one take (since there is so much adlibbing [sp?] on the show) but the actions in another so they just combined the too. Usually, though, this only happens where the characters mouth isnt in view.

As I was just telling my mother, Momma Allah, that Scrubs is a great DVD buy!
