The Polar Express - November 22nd

From DVD Times:

Warner Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of The Polar Express for 22nd November 2005 priced at $29.95 SRP. When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe. Robert Zemeckis directs this CG animated film that Tom Hanks provides most of the voices for.

Available in separate Widescreen and Full Screen editions the film will be presented with English, French and Spanish DD5.1 Surround audio and subtitle options in the same languages. Bonus features are TBC, but should be plentiful.

Cover art is also available there.

DVD Answers is reporting this as a one-disc set:

Warner has officially announced the Robert Zemeckis directed The Polar Express, which features the voice of Tom Hanks. The single-disc release will be available to own from the 22nd November this year, and should retail at around $29.95. The film itself will be presented in 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with English, French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. English, French and Spanish subtitles, will also be provided. I'm afraid Warner still hasn't revealed details on the extra material, but we'll bring you the full announcement shortly.

I find that somewhat surprising given a) Robert Zemeckis' usual interest in DVDs, and b) WB's desire to get as much money from this as possible.

Of course, perhaps they're going the Harry Potter route, and deciding not to "spoil the magic" for kids. Which is fine, too, I guess.

Filmmaker 06-13-05 03:54 PM

I'm on it...I can't wait for the day when it can be seen in 3-D at home, though...

Giles 06-13-05 04:32 PM

I thought I had read somewhere, there was going to be another IMAX release around the holiday season, guess that was nixed.

Filmmaker 06-13-05 04:44 PM

I doubt it's been nixed at all...I'd gladly pay to see it again in 3-D even if I had the 2-D version at home.

Steve Phillips 06-13-05 04:51 PM

I've heard there will be 3-D screenings, in both IMAX and also some digital DLP theatres, all in clear glasses polarized.

Or maybe they're planning a SE for next year.

Um, it's going to be a two-disc set.

Extras: the never-before-seen Smokey and Steamer song "You Look Familiar," "The Many Polar Faces of Tom Hanks" and "A Genuine Ticket To Ride" featurettes, "True Inspirations: An Author's Adventure" profiling Chris Van Allsburg, "Believe" (Josh Groban performs at the Greek Theater), "Behind the Scenes of 'Believe'" (bringing a hit song to magical life in the recording studio), "Polar Express Challenge," "Meet the Snow Angels" (the moviemakers' Christmas memories), a THQ PC game demo with two playable levels, the theatrical trailer and DVD-ROM weblinks.

Filmmaker 06-14-05 08:37 AM

Well, a fair amount of those extras suck (two things on Josh Groban? Who gives a rat's?), but hey, if it's got the trailer, I'm good to go!

They picked a great cover sheet

No commentary? :(

ReduxGuy 06-14-05 05:35 PM

Wow, lots of films are turning into 2-discs from the WB.

At least they don't screw around like Fox.

So, I wonder if this means House of Wax will be a 2-discer.

Excellent news! Saw this in the theater with the kids and really loved it. Not having read the book I was at a disadvantage regarding the "look" of the film and at first glance found all the kids on the creepy side. Now that I have read the book, it all makes sense. Definately a purchase for me.

mzupeman2 06-15-05 09:41 AM

I have seen this movie twice, one of those times being in 3D in an IMAX theater. I just don't know how I can go back to watching it after the fact. But hey, by the time November roles around I'm sure I'll be in enough holiday cheer not to care.
