Monty Python: 16 Ton Megaset ?

What am I looking at here:

http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=ANE072952

????

Any details? What makes this different than the existing "megaset"?

"Sixteen-disc set includes all 45 episodes of the hit British comedy series, plus "Monty Python Live!""

Didn't the Megaset just go out of print? Could they be re-releasing this? Good news, if that's the case.

Ok, that makes 15... Or is the "Live" 2 discs? Because the TV Show is 14.

I believe the Live set is 2 discs, which would add up right.

I got the A&E megaset at Sam's for $89.99. It has all the episodes which makes this new one unnecessary for me. Unless they had some extra incentives....which I think wold be kind of hard because the first set has a good amount of great odds and ends on each disc.

One of those is a "lost German episode", though, so they might be just putting the one disc which is actually "Monty Python Live" in the set.

Except the specs say 16 discs, and the regular boxset is 14, which means they would have to add two discs.

What a strange decision this is... it sounds like they are combining the existing 14-disc set with the 2-disc "Live" set, which includes one of the German episodes.

Yet, they are NOT including the 2-disc "Life Of Python" set, which includes the other German episode. Why not just make it an 18-disc set and put everything that A&E has released in one set? Unless I'm just confused, this doesn't make much sense.

Oh well, I guess I don't need this one way or the other. :) I wonder if they'll opt for thinner packaging this time?

From what I remember, the megaset and the 2-disc individual collections have both been OOP for a while. It's just that they're slow sellers, so they've always been available.

I seem to recall seeing a pile of these at Costco this weekend...

This set would be awesome if they released it in those double slimline cases. I've got the megaset and Live anyway already, so I'm not concerned about this but it would be a space saving set.

I was thinking they'd do this eventually. I keep reading articles in Video Business, etc. about how retailers are concerned about shelf space (specifically for TV on DVD) and more and more companies are going thin.

A&E's megasets (The Prisoner, Space:1999, Monty Python, etc.) are HUGE. I would think it would be a challenge to get retailers to stock these, given the large amount of space they take up. I welcome the switch to thinpaks, if it happens...

Last time I was there, Costco was packing Live in with the Megaset for around $90 (or maybe $100). They also had a pack-in with the Emma Peel Sets (best of Original Avengers) for about the same.

This is now available at Amazon:

I don't know about this set, but I purchased the previous one during last year's 20% sale. It came packaged with the two-disc Live! set.

Really? Damn... I didn't know that was available that way. Where'd you order it from?

RockyMtnBri 09-01-05 03:09 PM

I'd like to order the slim line packaging for the set if possible - it takes up WAY too much room on my shelf! I was ticked when I saw Jazz reissued in slim lines!

Many sketches ended with a 16-ton weight crushing someone to death,
in lieu of a punchline or link. Obviously the reason for 16 discs.
Can someone recall any running jokes involving the number 18?
In any case, I've owned all this material on DVD for years now.
