Jaws & Casino SE Out at Wal-Mart

Dropped by Wal-Mart to see if they had the upcoming WWE '80s release (which they had out early, btw), and I noticed they also had Jaws & the SE of Casino on the shelves. Unfortunately, they were both FS with no WS editions to be found. I even took the chance of asking a clerk and he couldn't find any WS editions in the back. I guess it's worth a look, though. As an aside, the Jaws set looked awesome (nice, thick case). Made me upset they didn't have anything but FS.

Rypro 525 06-07-05 08:45 PM

can we put to rest if the casino set is a flipper or not (you can normally tell if its a flipper by felling and shaking the package.

Drexl 06-07-05 09:08 PM

I saw the same titles at my Wal-Mart, and they were fullscreen only there too. It doesn't look they are going to get them in WS since there is just one "spot" on the shelf where the price sticker is and the discs are lined up (if they were going to get both there would be two spots). Maybe I should report the street date violation on general principle. ;)

I probably wouldn't have bought them anyway though. I'm not in a hurry since they are double dips for me, and I want to check for lower prices in the ads next week.

If I go again soon I'll give the Casino box a shake.

SFranke 06-07-05 09:18 PM

I actually gave the Casino case a shake. Sadly, it sounded like a single disc release.

Mr. Cinema 06-07-05 09:26 PM

DVD Empire lists Casino as dual sided, dual layered....

Julie Walker 06-07-05 10:04 PM

A flipper release does not bother me,so Casino will be mine....eventually. I have to cut down on my dvd buying,so Jaws for me. Everything else will have to wait.

My local WalMart was putting out these two titles on Monday, and they also only had the FS version.

I don't know if more WalMarts are like this or not, but my local store is getting very bad at ONLY stocking the FS version of DVDs. It's not for everything yet, but as time goes by I see more and more WS DVDs fading away from WM.

I've asked two different people who work there about it and they all have said the same thing:

"Well, I believe WM has finally realized that most people only want the FS version."

Which is ironic since the FS copies sit around forever on the shelves, while the WS copies are sold immediately.

With Wal Mart the only new DVD seller in my local area, this is why I don't even bother going there to look for stuff, and just order from some on-line retailer.

They really mean most people that shop at WALMART want the FS only, and that's probably very true.

Would one of those "shoppers" go by the name of DVD Josh? ;)

Seriously, one of the last times I was in Wal Mart looking for a new WS release, I talked to the clerk and said she preferred WS. So the ignorance isn't corporate wide, if you know what I mean.

I can confirm that the Casino SE is most definitely a single disc with content on both sides. I received a copy a few weeks ago.

Drexl 06-07-05 11:28 PM

The Wal-Mart here is very good about carrying both versions 99% of the time, so this seems odd. Now, I have noticed that after a title has been out for a long time, they will only have one spot for it in one of the displays away from the electronics section. Often, all of the copies in that spot will be FS. Maybe most of the people who buy WS are the enthusiasts like us that tend to get them right away?

These people drive Chevrolets, shop at Wal-Mart and never miss an episode of Friends. They're Americans.

Great line from Dreamcatcher.

And apparently they buy butchered DVDs.

In the land of the blind, the FS DVD is king.

wm lopez 06-08-05 03:42 AM

So what's the prices on these dvds at Wal-Mart?

Daniel L 06-08-05 04:35 AM

Same thing happened to me. The worst part? I bought the Jaws disc at 3 AM and didn't notice my mistake until I got home. I returned it today but was disappointed to find that they had absolutely no WS copies. I suppose I'll wait a week and pick it up at Best Buy. I was so close...

Does anyone else find it odd that a release like this would even have a separate FS version? I know it's a big anniversary release of a popular film, but it still seems odd. With the movie as old as it is I don't know why they bothered.

Fincher Fan 06-08-05 05:13 AM

Finally! Casion comes to DVD!

Damn you Lowrey!! :D

I have never heard the phrase "is this one the one with only half the picture" anywhere besides Walmart.

dsa_shea 06-08-05 07:34 AM

It seems to me that when older movies are released Wal-Mart tends to get only the FS copies of the movies. I wanted to buy There's Something More About Mary as well as a few other titles that are offered in both WS and FS and they only carried the FS versions.

feral125 06-08-05 09:08 AM

People with families or casual viewers shop at walmart. They don't care about things like proper aspect ratios. If you want the widescreen go to Best Buy.

Mr. Cinema 06-08-05 10:19 AM

What I really love is when they have their widescreen tvs on all day, and yet offering mostly full screen dvds for their customers.

runnersdialzero 06-08-05 11:25 AM

No kidding. My Wal Mart has a huge section of Widescreen TV's now that they are selling.

"Here...buy our widescreen TVs, but whoops, sorry, you can't have the corrosponding widescreen DVD. Sorry."

Just to go with the flow checked at my local Super Wal-mart and just like everyone else, Casino and Jaws are on the shelves but only in FS.

*Sidenote* The Jaws package is a nice thick setup.

buckee1 06-08-05 12:04 PM

Went to my Wal-Mart and indeed the shelves were packed with FS versions of both films however, the clerk was nice enough to go into the shipping box and pull WS versions for both Casino & Jaws 30th! One note of interest however, the sticker sheet on the back of both the FS & WS jaws discs for at least this location showed the same Full Frame 1:33.1 OAR. After having checked my disc I am very happy to say that someone goofed with the sticker sheets!
