Technical question on Windows Media T2

Someone recently pointed out something I didn't know about T2- the high def version. Apparently it requires an internet conncetion to make a download before you can play it back. Can someone explain to me a business or technical reason for that? I'm not saying there isn't one but I can't divine the purpose of that.

Thanks

The HD version is protected with Digital Rights Management and you have to obtain a license to view it.

Thanks - but to what end. You don't have to give a credit card or anything and you can play the DVD on another computer.

To regulate the copying and distribution of the file. The DRM confirms that you've got an original disc in your drive so that 5,435,326,369 people on SoulSeek don't all get to watch it.

Just fyi, people have figured out how to strip the drm off the files.DRM free ones made some rounds or you could do it yourself.

Once you got the license to view it, how long is it good for? If your PC is fried or you are upgrading a new one, can you simply just get another license again?

Yes, I got a license a couple of times on different machines. I think the original discs are the important thing.

I just didn't like the players I had to use to play it.

Thanks for the clarification. I thought it was like those BMW's The Hire HD movies that are good for 3 months after getting a license (I don't have them but I recall I read about it here).
