"Dead Like Me" - a quick question.
 

Since my last blind buy ("Wonderfalls") was such a positive surprise, I have decided to buy "Dead Like Me". It seems like a great show and the the two seasons doesn't cost much, but there is one problem; subtitles. Well, the lack of subtitles, I should say. I live in Europe, and our TV sets doesn't support CC, so I have to know if I can choose the CC from the DVD menu.

Can anyone help? :)

No English subtitles on Season 1, just CC. Don't know about Season 2.

A software player will display CC. Try WinDVD.

No DVD players will decode closed captioning. Here in the US, that is a function of the television set, not the DVD player.

I have a Cyberhome CH-300 that decodes closed captioning separate of my TV... the captions are smaller and different looking than TV-based captions, and have to be turned on in one of the DVD player's sub-menus. When switched on, they work even if the TV set's CC is switched off, and they will also display simultaneously along with DVD subtitles if those are switched on too. I don't think very many DVD players have built-in CC decoding though.

Is this true ?

I´ve read in the 300´s User Manual that:

"In this menu you can enable or disable the closed captions feature. These are especially for hearing impaired people. Please note that the DVD has to support this feature. Furthermore, you need a video subtitle decoder"

This means that the entry means that the player is capable of sending the required Closed Caption signals to the TV or decoding box.

So:

Do I need a separate Closed Captions decoder or not ?

Acording to timbre : No

Acording to the User Manual : Yes ( .. I suppose )

Can anyone actually try a R1 Closed Captions only DVD and see what happens in your 300´s Cyberhome equipment ?

I suppose that´s the only way to be sure.

My CH-300 will display closed captions if the CC option is turned on in the menu... no video subtitle decoder is needed, and the subtitles are outputted as part of the video signal through the coax and component jacks. This will work for any region DVDs that have CC encoding, such as the R1 Black Adder set.
